Lady Tornado place second at Juggler Tournament
UTICA – After surving a close game with Holland Patent, the Lady Purple Tornado faced another tough opponent in the Utica Notre Dame Juggler Tournament. The 8-0 and number 16 in the state host team, the Lady Jugglers.
Opening up Norwich’s scoring was Halea Eaton, sinking a three for the Tornado early in the game. The Purple also received a bucket from Saige Benedict and five points by Triniti Myers over the first eight minutes, keeping up the the Jugglers tempo.
Eaton again dialed in from long-range, knocking down her second of the game. Adding another basket in the second quarter, Eaton led the scoring for Norwich in the second as they nearly answered every basket scored by Notre Dame. Sydney Coggings also hit a long ball for Norwich in the stanza while Haley Colabelli, Benedict and Myers each added two.
The Tornado’s 15 point second quarter allowed them to keep the game to a two-possession difference at the intermission.
Cutting it down to just one possession was Myers, who took her turn from beyond the arc and hitting her second three of the contest. Outscoring the Lady Jugglers in the third by one point, the Purple’s pushy defense exhausted the Notre Dame team, showing a threat to take the lead early in the fourth.
Before the final quarter of play, Sisters Emma and Claire Sehring of Utica Notre Dame combined to score 23 of their team’s 38 points.
The two scored all 17 of the Jugglers’ fourth-quarter points by finishing at the rim after breaking the Norwich press or getting a second chance off an offensive board. The home team pulled away early in the fourth for a 55-39 victory over Norwich in the championship game.
Emma Sehring finished with a game-high 23 points while sister Claire Sehring scored 18 points.
Eaton finished 13 points to lead the Purple while Myers added 10. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Purple are in action tonight as they host another Section III opponent, the Utica Proctor Raiders. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
