Nets torched in Lady Marauders’ loss to Waterville
SHERBURNE – The girls of Sherburne-Earlville and Waterville combined to score a total of 143 points in Tuesday’s game in Sherburne but the Lady Marauders were on the losing side of the high scoring contest.
Despite Kaitlyn Furner’s back-to-back-to-back threes in the first quarter, the Marauders found themselves down by 20 points until midway through the second. At the halftime break, the Waterville lead was cutdown to 13.
But Sherburne-Earlville came out of the intermission with a little fire. Having a strong defensive third, the Marauders held their opponent to a scoring drought, allowing just 10 after two 20-plus point quarters.
The 13 point deficit was completely erased in the third when S-E’s Tessa Cole stripped a Waterville player of the ball and finished at the rim to tie the game at 55-55 at the end of 24 minutes of play.
The Marauders Sage Ashton knocked down her third triple of the game, giving her team their first lead of the contest.
But with six minutes remaining, the momentum shifted to the visiting team. Waterville picked up the tempo and finished baskets in transition as the Indians finished the game with a 20-4 run. They went on to win 80-63.
Cole’s 22 led the Marauders in the scoring column while Furner, who hit five three-pointers on the night, finished the night with 20.
Sherburne-Earlville will look to carry their hot shooting hands into tonight’s game as they host Frankfort-Schuyler for their second game of a back-to-back schedule. Game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., immediately following the JV.
