NORWICH – The Lady Purple Tornado’s ambitious defense has often creates their offensive opportunities this season. Their play in Wednesday’s contest was no different, as they took down non-league opponent Utica Proctor, 56-34 , with a good portion of their points coming from steals and transition baskets.
Taking the opening tip, a three point basket by Norwich’s Triniti Myers kicked off the 20 point first quarter for the home team. Before Utica Proctor could get in a half-court set, Abby Flynn came up with a steal, kicked it out to Taylor Hansen. Hansen then finished hard at the rim and got the foul called.
At the defensive end, Hansen blocked a shot and the ball was against kicked ahead in transition to a running Myers, who also got the hoop and the foul a block to give Norwich a 10-0 lead.
Next, it was Purple Tornado Nicole Jeffrey’s turn. Jeffrey stole the ball from the Proctor guard in the backcourt and scored. The very next possession, Jeffrey records another steal and outlets it to Hansen for the easy bucket.
Later in the quarter, Jeffrey pulled in the offense rebound and put it right back up, extending the Norwich’s lead to 19-0.
The first point scored for Utica Proctor came at the free throw line late in the first, the only way the Raiders scored to start the game, due to the stingy defense of the Purple Tornado.
Norwich’s lead after one was 20-3.
Showing no signs of letting up, Tornado Hannah Baker dialed in from long range for a three.
The Purple offense continuously moved the ball around to find the open teammate, who in returned knocked down the shot.
On the other end, their defense held Proctor without a made field goal until 42 second left in the second quarter. Norwich took a 36-5 lead into the halftime break.
However, the Purple came out flat in the third quarter and the visiting team took full advantage. In fact, Utica Proctor took that eight minutes of play by a score of 18-4 as Norwich was played by turnovers in what seemed like every offensive possession.
The Raiders, down by 17 heading into the final quarter, found themselves in a decent position to make anything happen.
And just like that, the Tornado went back to the way they played first half, scoring 16 in the stanza to end any chance of a Utica Proctor comeback.
With the way the home team shared the ball throughout the contest, Norwich received balanced scoring from starters and players in from the bench. Myers led the way with nine points while Hansen and Sydney Coggins each recorded eight. Jeffrey and Benedict finished with seven a piece.
