Five Norwich wrestlers bring home STAC bragging rights
BINGHAMTON – Friday and Saturday marked another ‘play-off’ wrestling tournament with the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships held at Chenango Valley High School.
Going into the championship Saturday, Norwich was in third place and trailed Horseheads by 22 points.
But Norwich still had points to record, having six make it to finals Saturday. Six seems to the Purple’s magic number as they have had six in the finals for the third time this season.
Dante Geislinger kicked off Norwich’s final run in the 99-pound weight class. He pinned Dante Rigal of Johnson City at 5:10, winning his second consecutive STAC title in just as many years.
Purple Tornado Nick Glanville made it to the tournament finals in 113 pound. Glanville nearly lasted the entire match against Corning’s Drew Witham but Witham pinned Glanville with :28 seconds remaining in the match. Witham has only lost two matches in the 2017-2018 season and is ranked number one for Division-I in the section for 113 pounds.
Number one in the section in Division-II for 126 pounds is Mike Squires of Norwich. Squires, coming off two big wins in the Section IV Championship dual tournament on Thursday continued on his winning path as he recorded the decision win over Chase Daudelin of Corning.
The Purple’s next finalist to wrestle as 170 pound Ty Rifanburg. His matchup for the finals was against Horseheads’ Chris Eames. Both wrestlers are ranked number one in their respective divisions in Section IV. The two have met earlier this season with Rifanburg taking a 7-5 decision win at the Windsor Christmas Tournament.
With 27 seconds left in the match, Eames escaped Rifanburg’s hold two score a point and break the 4-4 tie. Only a few seconds remaining, Rifanburg took his shot at a takedown. He landed it with seconds left on the clock, attacking low and going for Eames legs. The take down gave Rifanburg at 6-5 decision win as the official blew the whistle, again claiming a STAC crown.
Brennan Slater was looking to repeat as a STAC champion from a season ago for the Tornado. He was facing Mitchell Knapp of Susquehanna Valley. The two have also matched up earlier this season with Slater taking a 5:52 fall win. Slater took down Knapp again with a pin, this one coming at 4:26.
And for the third time this season, 220 pounders Tyler Rice of Norwich and Lucas Scott of Chenango Forks faced each other. The two have spilt as Rice’s came in the Semifinals at Clyde Cole while Scott’s came in their league dual match just a few weeks ago.
With 8.6 remaining in the match, Rice held a slim 1-0 lead. Needing to take down his opponent, Scott went in with his shot attempt to land a takedown with the time expired for the match. However, the call was questioned and the two officials conversed. The two points that were awarded to Scott were taken off the scoreboard as the call was reversed and Rice was awarded his first career STAC crown.
As Norwich had six in the finals with five winning, the Purple Tornado moved into second place with their points they racked up during the round. However, it wasn’t enough to overtake Horseheads from day one, finishing at second.
Norwich heads to Syracuse to represent Section IV in the first ever New York State Dual Tournament on Saturday, January 27. Opening Ceremonies for the tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. with the first round of wrestling to being at 9 a.m.
