NMS recognizes student icons as way to commend more students

NORWICH – Norwich Middle School recognized its Student Icon Award winners during a mid-year celebration on Thursday morning.

NMS Principal Scott Ryan said the Student Icon Award is part of a Recognition Rethink initiative within the middle school's strategic planning department which strives to find ways to increase opportunities to recognize students in grades six through eighth.

63 sixth graders, 90 seventh graders, and 88 eighth graders were recognized Thursday morning after being nominated by one or more of their teachers for exceeding expectations in the following areas: applying self to daily learning; showing effort, participation and preparedness; having respect for self, peers and the school environment; and demonstrating excellent attendance and promptness.

Ryan said in year's past, as part of the Recognition Rethink initiative, NMS would recognize two students from each grade level monthly.

"What our strategic planning session focused on this year was how can we recognize more students?" said Ryan. "What teachers said was, 'I want to be able to recognize and nominate students for my class specifically.'"

The Student Icon Award is a year-long initiative incentivizing students to maintain their icon status through the end of the school year. Of the school's approximately 375 students, 145 had earned icon status by Thursday.

"The idea is students have to maintain that status," said Ryan. "It can be taken away. And at the 40-week mark, which is the end of the school year, Senator [Fred] Akshar is joining us for a family/community engagement night on June 20, where we recognize all students for 40-weeks of sustainable icon status."

Students are also able to acquire icon status from more than one of their teachers––Ryan said one student managed six icon awards by the 20-week mark.

As an extension of the Student Icon Award, Ryan said NMS has also created opportunity for the community to offer and award a student at the middle school with its newly devised Community Icon Status.

"The emphasis for recognition will be placed on involvement in the community with the intent to support or improve something," said Ryan. "An act of kindness, for example, is an act of support."

Ryan said the student icon recognition will be given to all nominated students, and all icons who maintain their status will attend the end of year celebration on June 20. Those who nominate a student for the Community Icon Status will be invited to attend as well.
