Crouch announces minority task force report on preventing domestic violence
ALBANY – Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch (R-Bainbridge) announced Tuesday that the Assembly Minority Conference has released a Task Force report following five regional forums around the state that provided an outlet for victims of domestic abuse, advocates and law enforcement. The forums were tasked with finding ways to prevent in-home violence and effectively support those who have suffered domestic violence.
“I am very happy to join my colleagues in unveiling the Minority Conference Task Force report today,” said Crouch. “Victims of domestic violence are vulnerable and often don’t have the resources to effectively remove themselves from the situation. Providing them with guidance and letting them know that they have options and opportunities to separate themselves from an abusive relationship is extremely important.”
Tuesday at a press conference held in Albany, the Assembly Minority Conference revealed their findings and suggested solutions in a report called “A Safe Haven: Helping Abuse Victims and Enhancing Protections.”
Main recommendations from the report include but are not limited to:
· Declares domestic violence as a statewide public health crisis.
· Provide funding to cover the housing needs of those seeking shelter from their abusers.
· Arrange for reimbursement for each person these shelters assist with the aim to maintain a high degree of individualized care and assistance.
· Create a state-funded training system to promote coordination between law enforcement, prosecutors and administrators with the goal of providing seamless assistance to victims and greater understanding of their personal situation.
· Arrange funds to help negate the cost of living expenses victims suffer while seeking help to distance themselves from their abuser.
· Create a new law making domestic violence in the presence of a child a much more severe offense.
“From our forums and open debates with advocates, law enforcement and victims we gained a lot of information that helped us craft our report and provide solutions,” said Crouch. “I truly hope that our findings and suggestions are reviewed by the governor and Assembly Majority. Domestic violence is a serious societal problem today that needs to be addressed. Hopefully after reviewing our report we can work together to get meaningful legislation passed this year.”
