Big third quarter and strong all-around game from Palmatier lead Bobcats over Cooperstown
BAINBRIDGE – At the end of the third quarter of play, the Lady Bobcats held a two point lead over the visiting Cooperstown Hawkeyes. But in the final eight minutes of play, Bainbridge-Guilford outscored Cooperstown 18-9 on their way to the Bobcats fourteenth win of the season.
Cooperstown held the slim advantage after one, leading by one point. The second quarter started with an Abi Selfridge basket for the Bobcats exchanged with a three-point play by Julie Ford.
The next three trips up the floor resulted in Megan Palmatier buckets, which ultimately led to the final lead change of the contest. Palmatier finished the quarter with eight points to give Bainbridge-Guilford a 29-23 lead at the half time break.
Cooperstown fought back in the third, scoring 11 and closing to gap down to two.
That’s when the Bobcats Selfridge sisters combined for 14 of the team’s 18 in the fourth, pulling away from the Hawkeyes for the win Monday night.
Ford, a 6-foot-3 University of Albany commit, had been averaging 8.8 rebounds and 13.3 per game. That was until she faced Bainbridge-Guilford’s Palmatier. Palmatier kept Ford off the boards, limiting her to below average while nearly holding her below her scoring average. Ford finished with 14 to lead her team in the scoring column.
“Megan did a great job keeping Julie off the boards, which allowed for our 5-foot guard Jill Cannistra to grab 10 rebounds for the game,” said Bobcats head coach Bob Conway. “Tonight’s win was an all-around big team win led by Megan.”
Palmatier ended the night with 16 points and six assists, in a game that was described by Conway was one her best all-around games the season.
Abi Selfridge led the Bobcat scoring with a game-high 20 and pulled down 16 boards, recording a double-double in the win. Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor.
Bainbridge-Guilford hosts Oxford on Wednesday and will travel to Greene on Friday for a battle of second place in the MAC standings. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. start times.
