Norwich wrestlers go 1-1 at first ever NYS Dual Tournament; Gain experience heading into championship part of season

At this point in the match, the score was 35-27, in favor of Canisteo-Greenwood.
Norwich’s Keegan Wright gave his team a key win in the 170 match. Wright was trailing Canisteo-Greenwood’s Blake Gilges in the second period. But Wright wrestled hard and waiting for his opportunity. Nearing one minute left in the second, Wright took his shot, pinning his opponent and pulling the Purple within two points.
At 182, the Tornado’s Ty Rifanburg accepted a forfeit, handing Norwich a 39-35 lead heading into the last match of the dual.
Joe Madore needed to avoid the tech fall or a pin for Norwich to win but Canisteo-Greenwood’s Curtis Quick scored the first period pin at 195 to give his team the two point win.
“We lost a tough match and hats off to Canisteo-Greenwood,” said Norwich’s head coach Bob Hagenbuch. “They have a good team and great coaching staff. We have nothing to be ashamed of as we only lost by two points to the team who barely lost in the finals.
“I put the best line up in that I thought would get us the win. I know there will be Monday quarterbacks, second guessing but that comes with the territory.”
Norwich rolled in their second match, topping Section I Pearl River, 56-25. Rice, Geislinger, Squires, Rodriguez, Rifanburg, Wright and Slater all won their second of the day.
Other notable match win in the Tornado’s big win were Andrew Brown with a 2:46 pin, Nick Glanville rebounding from his first match loss with a :17 pin over his Pearl River opponent, and brother Gabe Glanville following right behind with a 19-4 tech fall (a 15 point or more differential).
“Pearl River was a nice bounce back win. This is my third season as head coach here and we have not lost two duals in a row,” said Hagenbuch.
In case Pearl River beat Canisteo-Greenwood, Norwich received the big margin win they needed because the tiebreaker rule came down to points. Norwich looked on, hoping for the Pearl River win. Unfortunately, Pearl River lost to Canisteo-Greenwood, sending the Section V representative to the semi-final round and Norwich home.
But the Purple Tornado didn’t return empty-handed.
“We got such a great experience for Norwich Wrestling,” said Hagenbuch. “It was an excellent opportunity to be apart of the first NY State Dual tournament and it’s nice to get a win at any state tournament.
“The atmosphere was exciting to compete in. Some of our guys were a little awe struck I think. But I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young men and moments like this weekend will prepare us for what we train for – Sectional and State Champions.”
Norwich hosts Athens – a school just over the Pennsylvania boarder – in one final dual meet at home in preparations for Section IV Class C tournament on Saturday. The Class action will start at 10 a.m. at Whitney Point High School.
