Lady Bobcats take sole possession of second in MAC

GREENE – After a bucket from an Erica Selfridge 15-footer to open the third quarter, the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats hit four consecutive three-pointers to grow their lead from the second and put the game out of reach for the Greene Trojans. B-G outscored the Trojans 21-6 in the eight minute span en route to their 59-31 win, a win that gives the Bobcats second place in the MAC standings.
In the first, both teams went back-and-forth as nearly every basket scored by one team was answered by the other. Bainbridge-Guilford slightly pulled away after two straight stops on defense. During the Bobcats 8-2 run, Abi Selfridge scored six points in a row, helping grow the lead to seven.
Greene answered at the end of the quarter with a Sand three at the buzzer, closing the lead to four.
To start the second stanza, B-G scored the first six points before Sands again ahlted the run with a three. But the three-point shooting of the Bobcats started in the second as Kori Thornton and Jill Cannistra combined for three in the quarter, helping get the 16 point difference at the break.
After the big third quarter by the Bobcats, the lead went to 31.
But it wasn’t just the ability of Bainbridge-Guilford to knock down the long-range shots that won them the game. The Bobcats moved the ball around to find the open player before a shot was released, giving the team a total of 16 assists. Megan Palmatier, the B-G stand-out forward led with six.
Throughout the contest, Palmatier was doubled down low. She made the smart decision to kick it out, most of the time finding the open player who in return nailed the shot.
Palmatier finished with 10 points.
Another key was the rebounding by the Bobcats as they totalled 36 rebounds for the game, 21 coming on the defensive end to limit the Trojans to many one-and-done trips offensively.
Abi Selfridge recorded a double-double by leading the team in rebounds with 13 boards while scoring 12.
“We didn’t rebound well enough to win tonight and combined with the foul trouble we had in the early stages of the second quarter the game got away from us early,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “Credit BG for their job on the boards because to me that was the difference in the game.”
Greene was led by Sands 11 points. Sophia Brown added nine points. The two players combined for all six of the Trojans three-point field goals.
Bainbridge-Guilford’s Erica Selfridge finished with 11 points while they were led by Kori Thornton’s game-high 15. The Bobcats ended the game with four in double-digits. Cannistra fell one point shy of adding a fifth with nine.
Both the Bobcats and Trojans are in action again on Tuesday, February 6. Greene travels to Unadilla Valley while Bainbridge-Guilford hosts Sidney. Both games are the team’s regular season finales. The two teams are expected to face eachother at Bainbridge-Guilford On Monday, February 12 for one of the MAC Semi-final games. Time to be announced when all standings are determined final.
