Marauders repeat as Section III Class D winners; Vikings have three wrestlers place

COOPERSTOWN – With five in the finals and two taking the Class D titles, the Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville brought home Section III Class D bragging rights for the second year in a row.
Both the Vikings of Otselic Valley and Sherburne-Earlville traveled to Cooperstown Saturday, February 3 to participate in the Class D Tournament. The two schools had a combined total of 12 wrestlers place and all will qualify for the Section III Division-II Championship Tournament in Syracuse that will be held on Saturday, February 10.
Bailey Walzer of the 160 pound weight class was the first of the Marauders to win with a 15-0 tech fall over Cato-Meridian’s Ethan Scanlon. Walzer reached the finals with two pins in his firs to matches.
Alex Thompson of S-E was the second champion crowned for an individual title. Thompson also reached the finals with two pins but won his match by a 3:34 pin over Josh Greenwood of Beaver River.
The Marauders’ Morgan Lakin (132), Ethan Eldred (170) and Tanner Campbell (195) all finished in second place. Lakin made it to the finals with a 2-0 decision and a :34 pin. In the finals, he faced Beau Burke. Burke took a 5-2 decision over Lakin after the full six minutes of the match.
Eldred made his run to the finals with two pins, 1:08 and :15. In the finals, he met Onondaga’s Dylan Stellmack. The two also went the full length of the match with Stellmack taking a 7-0 decision.
Campbell’s finals appearance happened because of a 1:11 pin in the semis over Dolgeville’s John Monk. However, Harold Sherman of Cato-Meridian topped him in the last match with a close 4-2 decision.
S-E’s Jessie Lynch of the 182 took third after wrestling his way back from a quarterfinals loss to Onondaga’s Jack Bailey. Making it back to the consolation finals, Lynch pinned Dylan Randall of Dolgeville in 2:43.
Marauders’ Vinny Albertina finished in fourth after losing a tough, close decision to Morrisville-Eaton’s Mason Warner. The final score of the match was 2-1.
Keith Rood (152) and Myrick Elrod (160) of Sherburne-Earlville both took home fifth place and both will received an alternate spot.
Thompson’s pin over a Beaver River opponent at 220 sealed the victory for the Marauders giving them back to back Class D titles with a final score of 156.5 as a team.
Otselic Valley finished with 55 team points and will have three wrestlers and one alternate in Saturday’s tournament.
Vikings’ Corbin Learned reach the 138 pound finals match with two pins in the earlier rounds, both in less than one minute of action on the mat. In the finals, he met Kyle Greene of South Lewis. Greene topped Learned with a 3:39 pin. Learned should have a good shot to receive a high-seed with his second place finish.
Nathan Purtell of OV lost his first match of the day but wrestled his way back to a third place finish, topping Beaver River’s Jonah Mullin with a 4:01 pin in the consolation finals.
Losing in the consolation match was Otselic Valley’s Dakota Hackett. Hackett went down with a pin by Burke, the 132 pound champ, in the quarterfinals. Hacket wrestled back to the consolation finals where his was also pinned.
Jolanda Price of the Vikings finished in sixth and will be an alternate at the championship on Saturday.
The Section III Division-II championship will be held at SRC arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College. Action will start this Saturday, February 10 at 10 a.m. Championship finals are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
