Oxford, Greene have 9 wrestlers to place in Section IV Class B Tournament

DELHI – Facing a tough field at the Section IV Class B Tournament, the Oxford Blackhawks and the Greene Trojans had a combined total of nine wrestlers place after their finishes this past Saturday, February 3.
Greene’s Noah Kennedy was crowned the 182 pound champion of the tournament after beating Maine-Endwell’s Greg Davis by a full length match being decided by a final of 3-1. Kennedy won his two matches to reach the finals by a 3:02 and 2:59 pin in the quarter and semi-finals.
In the 106 pound final, the Trojans’ Jordan Taft faced Kyle Willard of Groton. Willard had control from the start but Taft was able to avoid the pin as he wrestled to the last second of the six minute match. Taft lost to Willard with a 13-2 major decision but should still receive a good seed in this weekend’s championship.
Lyric Libbey of Greene placed fifth and will receive a seed in the Division-II Championships as the tournament will be filled with the top eight wrestlers from both the Class B and Class C tournaments held this past Saturday. Also placing for this weekend from the Trojans will be Harrison Stone after a fourth place finish, losing in the 145 consolation finals match to Emmett Wood by a 9-4 decision.
Libbey only wrestled in two matches on Saturday but lost his first one of the day to Spencer Van Etten’s Kamren Lehamn by a close 6-0 decision. In his last match – the match he won to place fifth – Libbey took down Chenango Valley’s Dominic Napoli with a pin in the third period, the 4:53 mark of the match.
The Blackhawks placed five that will be receiving seeds this weekend – Paul Baker, Jade SanSoucie, Dakota Freidel, Darren Law and Brady Smith.
Baker and SanSoucie faced each other in the consolation finals Saturday afternoon with Baker taking the decision of his teammate.
Freidel reached the consolation finals by winning his first match of the day with 4:57 pin over Chenango Valley’s Darien Henry but losing his next to M-E’s Davis in the next round by 8-1 decision. Friedel was then pinned by Thomas A Edison’s Antonio Steinhaur, taking home a fourth place finish.
Smith placed fifth, winning his last match of the afternoon with a first period pin over Nick Lamoreaux of Walton. All of Smith’s matches won throughout the day were won by first period pins, including a :43 fall one match earlier.
Law rounded out the Oxford wrestlers who placed on Saturday with a sixth place finish. All but one of Law’s matches were decided by pins, whether it was a win or loss for him. The only match that was not was in the fifth-place match against Odessa-Montour’s Colin Haag, Law’s last one of the day. Haag took a 13-4 major decision win.
Seeds for these wrestlers and all other wrestlers who will advance after this past Saturday’s Class Tournament will be announced later this week. Division-II Championship action will start on Friday at 5:15 p.m. with prelims and quarterfinals being wrestled only.
Wrestling will continue with the first round of wrestlebacks at 10 a.m. Semi-final matches will begin after the round is over, approximately at 11 a.m. Championship finals are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. later that day but all times are subject to change. Once again, this year’s Section IV Division-II Championships will be held at Watkins Glen High School.
