CHENANGO COUNTY – In anticipation of 'kitten season' beginning in early spring, the Chenango SPCA has announced 50 percent off of all adoption fees through the month of February in an effort to prepare for its expected influx of kittens.

Kitten season, according to CSPCA Program Coordinator Danelle Nolan, occurs every year in early spring when the shelter is inundated with pregnant cats, mom cats with litters of kittens, and orphan kittens.

Currently, Nolan said the CSPCA already has 110 animals available for adoption, 94 of which are cats.

"We still have some kittens who have been here through all of winter time so they've had to grow up here which is bad," said Nolan. "So we're trying to get some of these kittens out, they're under six months of age, really sweet, really good cats."

Nolan said the majority of cats come into the shelter as strays, but some were born at the CSPCA. "So we're trying to move out some of these kittens before the new kittens come here," said Nolan.

Through the month of February, CSPCA will offer adoptions for cats at a price of $50 if spayed or neutered, and $25 plus the price of surgery if not spayed or neutered.

The discount is also applicable for the shelter's dogs: dogs that are spayed or neutered can be adopted for $77.50, and dogs that are not spayed or neutered can be adopted for $20 plus the price of surgery to spay and neuter.

"You definitely get more bang for your buck if you get an animal that's already spayed or neutered," said Nolan. "We have kittens, some younger dogs, older dogs, we just have a really amazing group of animals."
