Lady Bobcats move into MAC tournament finals with win over Greene; more action from Monday night's games

BAINBRIDGE – The Lady Bobcats will move on to face the Delhi Bulldogs in the MAC conference championship for the fourth straight season after Bainbridge-Guilford’s 47-37 win over the visiting Greene Trojans on Monday night.
All tied up at 13-13 after the first quarter, the game between the Trojans and the Bobcats started the same way when these two teams met earlier this season in Greene.
And again B-G pulled away after a 11-6 run in the second quarter. Only this time the lead was five and still in reach for Greene to make a comeback.
The Trojans did just that, outscoring the Bainbridge-Guilford 14-12, closing the lead down to just 3 points.
But the Bainbridge-Guilford defense shut down Greene in the fourth, allowing just one three-pointer from Sophia Brown and an Emma Smith free-throw.
Down the closing stretch, the Bobcats went 4-for-6 at the line, securing the win and their chance at Delhi in the championship game on Friday night.
Alyssa Sands scored a team-high 14 for the Trojans while Brown added 10 and Smith finished with eight in the loss.
The Bobcats were led by Abi Selfridge’s 20 points and 12 rebounds, recording yet again another double-double on the season. Erica Selfridge finished 14 points, including two three-pointers. Megan Palmatier ended the night with nine, three coming at the foul line in the closing minutes of the game.
Bainbridge-Guilford will to hold onto the championship and will also be seeking revenge against Delhi from their earlier season loss . The loss is the only one for the the Bobcats this season. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Binghamton University Events Center.

Walton 51, Unadilla Valley 46
NEW BERLIN – In a MAC mini tournament opening round, Walton took down the higher seeded Storm 51-46 on Monday night.
After being tied at 15 after the first quarter, Jenna Hitt’s five points and Shelby Meade’s four aided in the six point lead for Unadilla Valley before the half.
But Walton came out of the intermission on fire, scoring 37 over the 16 minutes in the second half. Olivia Harby scored five of her 14 points to lead Walton in their second half scoring rout.
Defensively, the Lady Warriors held the home to just 20 points.
“We didn’t not come ready to play,” said UV’s head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “We came out flat and never got into a flow.”
Julia Oglesby finished the night with a team-high 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, recording a double-double in the loss. Meade scored a total of 13 for the game, 11 came in the first half when the Storm held the lead.
Unadilla Valley will play Harpursville on Thursday in another game of the MAC tournament.

Otselic Valley 54, McGraw 47
MCGRAW – The Lady Vikings ended their regular season on a high note, taking down league opponent McGraw in a convincing fashion 54-27 road win Monday night.
Otselic Valley head coach Nicholle Lippert wasn’t satisfied with the seven point lead her team held after the first half. “I told the girls someone needed to spark it up out there and I didn’t care who as long as someone stepped it up,” said Lippert.
It appeared to work at the Lady Vikings scored 21 after the intermission behind Amber Meigs 16 points. Of those 16, Meigs made half at the free-throw, shooting 8-for-14.
Rebounding was also a key factor for the Vikings win. Meigs along with Cassie Agren and Sara Kenyon combined for a total of 25 rebounds.
Agren added 10 points to her 15 rebounds, recording a double-double in the winning effort. Meigs also recorded a double-double finishing with a game-high 32 points and 10 boards.
Now, Lippert will begin to prepare her team for a first-round sectional game.
“I am hoping with almost a week of practice before our sectionals game, the girls will be rested and ready to work hard, producing a full game while leaving it all out on the court.
“For three of my players, this will be the last time they ever go to sectionals for basketball. I try telling all of them play as hard as you can for every minute you are on the court so you won’t have any regrets. Do not let the other team out work you. I hope this shows true Friday or Saturday,” said Lippert.
The Section III seed meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 14. Coaches will be notified of seed, game location, opponent and time after that meeting has ended. Once the information is received, the Evening Sun will have a schedule of the first-round games.

Sidney 53, Afton 48
AFTON – Trailing 21-18 at the halftime break, Sidney scored 35 in the second half to take down the Afton Crimson Knights 53-48 last Friday night.
The Lady Warriors held a two lead over Afton after the first quarter. But the Crimson Knight responded behind Amanda Spooner and Sam Schoelier’s combined eight points, outscoring Sidney in the second stanza 11-6 and taking the three point intermission lead.
Coming out of the half time break, Sidney’s Savannah Baldwin scored 12 of her game-high 18 points. Four of Baldwin’s points came from a perfect 4-for-4 showing at the free-throw line.
In the fourth, Sidney outscored the Crimson Knights by two points. With the big third quarter and their 5-for-6 at the foul line, the Lady Warriors snagged the five point win on the road.
Spooner finished the night with 16 points and her teammate Schoelier added nine points, leaving her one point shy of a double-double with her 13 rebounds.
Sidney played at Oxford last night and grabbed a four point win. Be on the look out in tomorrow’s edition for the game recap in another exciting battle between two MAC teams.

Sports Editors Note: The Sherburne-Earlville Boys Basketball was in action last night on the road against Adirondack. The Marauders took a 64-42 win in their last regular season game. S-E will now wait for Wednesday’s seed meeting to find out their first round sectional game.
