Lady Vikings handout early tournament upset to move into quarterfinals
FABIUS – The Lady Vikings pulled out the 40-28 upset against the seven-seed Fabius-Pompey on Friday night, moving into the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D girls Tournament.
Just one week earlier, Fabius-Pompey bead Otselic Valley by 15 points. “We knew going into it that it was going to be a battle that we needed to go into from the first whistle,” said Vikings head coach Nicholle Lippert.
For the entire 32 minutes of the game, the lady Vikings played with intensity.
Trailing by just three after the opening quarter, OV climbed their way back to a tie at 13-13 going into halftime.
After the break, the Vikings outscored the home team 27-15 over the next two quarters.
Aiding in the win was the way Otselic Valley controlled the boards. The Vikings’ Amber Meigs grabbed 14 rebounds while Cassie Agren was a serious force underneath, pulling down 11 boards as well. “Without the rebounds, this could have been a different game,” said Lippert. “I am so extremely proud of this team and the work they have put in this season. Every game has been a team effort.”
As far as scoring, OV was led by Meigs, who poured in 25 points in the contest and Grace Costa added eight.
The team contributes the win to the support from the school and community. According to Lippert, the school put together a spectator bus, which had about 35 students and teachers. “When the girls looked up and saw the amount of fans on our side, we knew it was going to be something special. Winning tonight meant the world to this school and community.”
The win Friday night was the first sectional win by the program since 2014, where the streak of three straight years ended. The 10-seed Vikings are now moving forward to play the two-seed, Sackets Harbor later tonight.
“We went there last year for the first round of sectionals,” said Lippert. “They are an exceptional team with a bunch of threats. Our plan will be to just go out and play basketball and work hard. I can’t ask any more than that from the girls, they will give 110-percent until the end.
If Otselic Valley is to pull off the upset, the Vikings will move into the semifinals of the tournament and face the winner of Waterville and Copenhagen at Onondaga Community College this Friday.
