Unadilla Valley 64, Harpursville 35
NEW BERLIN – At one point in the third quarter, the Lady Storm trailed the visiting Harpursville Hornets by a single point. But UV head coach Brandi Whitbeck said, “It was like someone flipped a switch.” A few stops and a couple of fastbreaks changed the momentum of the game, helping the Storm take the 64-43 win Thursday night.
Unadilla Valley started the game playing really well, outscoring the Hornets 32-23 before the halftime break.
But Harpursville came out of the intermission on a warpath, fighting their way back into the game and taking that one point lead in the third.
The Storm circled back to find the lead again by the end of the quarter. In the final eight minutes of play, Shelby Meade helped UV outscore the visiting team 16-6. Meade accounted for half of the Storm’s points in the quarter, scoring eight.
Unadilla Valley’s Julia Oglesby led the team for the night, finishing with a game-high 21 points while Meade finished with 17.
The Storm finished with a league record 7-5 and are currently sitting at an 11-9 overall record. UV will look to add another to the win column and continue their season when they travel to Spencer Van-Etten on Wednesday for their first round game of the Section IV Class C girls tournament. If Unadilla Valley is to win the contest, they will face Bainbridge-Guilford for the fourth time this season in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Greene 57, Deposit/Hancock 47
GREENE – Deposit/Hancock’s Malorie Rutledge paced the Eagles with eight points while teammate and stand-out Lacee Drake knocked down two three-pointers, giving their team a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. But in the next 16 minutes of basketball the host Lady Trojans took over the contest, outscoring the visiting team 33-16 on their way to a 57-47 win in the MAC mini-tournament game Wednesday.
In the second quarter, Greene received balance scoring from the girls on the floor. Greene’s McKenna Sergi finished the stanza with six points as the leader of the team but three others put points on the board before halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Trojans’ Alyssa Sands dialed in from long-distance, hitting three from beyond the three-point arc. Greene also had the inside presence in the quarter as Emma Smith scored eight points.
“We found the open girl consistently,” said Trojans’ head coach Dave Gorton. In fact the team finished with a game total of 14 assists as a team. “We had a very balanced effort for the win. It was nice for us to get back on track before sectionals.”
The Eagles started to climb back in the fourth behind Drake. In the first three quarters, Greene held Drake to 16 but she added 10 in the fourth. Her and Deposit/Hancock’s late comeback effort was a little too late.
Smith pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with her team-high 18 points for another double-double on the season. Sergi recorded 14 and grabbed five rebounds while dishing out five assists. Sands chipped in 13 points and Mary Borchardt had four assists and eight rebounds.
Greene was awarded the five-seed for sectionals and will face Odessa-Montour in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class C girls tournament. Both teams received a first round bye. With Odessa-Montour receiving the four seed, they are the higher of the two teams and will host the contest on Saturday evening. The winner will move into the semifinals of the top half of the bracket and could face the one-seed Bainbridge-Guilford if the Bobcats also win their quarterfinal game.

Greene 69, Bainbridge-Guilford 42
BAINBRIDGE – Greene’s 22 point first quarter and 32 point second half led the Trojans to a road win over the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats on Thursday.
The home Bobcats kept the game close in the first half, playing pretty decent according to head coach Brad Aldrich. But it was in the second half he stated the Trojans “got up and down the court” on B-G.
Greene’s defense held the Bobcats to just a total of 15 points over the course of the last 16 minutes of play.
Of the 42 total points scored by Bainbridge-Guilford, four players scored nine points. Devon Scherhaufer, Xavier Cherniak, Trevor Halaquist and Tom Palmatier were those Bobcats.
Greene’s Nate Barry led the Trojans in the scoring column, recording 16 in the contest. Teammates Nate Erickson and Smith each chipped in 14 and 12.
Greene travels to Lansing for a first round sectional game later today. This was the Bobcats final game of the 2017-2018 season.

Note: Box scores for each of the games above will appear in tomorrow’s edition of The Evening Sun. Also, the Section IV Bowling State Qualifying Tournament was held over the weekend with the Norwich Boys taking first place for the small school division.
