Village of New Berlin reviews grant and public record keeping

NEW BERLIN – Several topics were discussed at Tuesday's board of trustees meeting in the Village of New Berlin, including inaccurate meeting minutes, $10,000 or more worth of discrepancies in ambulance calls, and the purchase of new thermal cameras.

Before the meeting commenced Trustee Carol Riley announced the village's meeting minutes, which serve as the boards official public record, should not be used as a reference for the meeting's occurrences. Officials said the minutes did not always reflect what took place.

"The best thing is to come to the meetings and to hear it firsthand––not taking things off of the minutes, especially because the minutes are old," said Riley.

After the official meeting began, New Berlin Fire Chief Barry Jacobs, spoke about the recent purchase of new air packs for the fire department.

"There's a grant for $89,702 that will cover the cost of purchase, but we'll have to pay five percent of that, or approximately four to five thousand dollars," said Jacobs. The board was in support of the purchase under the stipulation that none of the air packs go to waste.

Jacobs discussed the fire department's purchase of two new thermal imaging cameras, which would be useful in rescue missions.

"If we're called to a car accident in the winter and nobody is around the vehicle, you can shine it around the area and pick up body heat signatures," he said.

Another topic mentioned Tuesday night, Emergency Medical Service Administrator Dale Barton addressed the board in regards to a $10,000 EMS call discrepancy.

"It averaged out to three calls a month and it didn't have to do with our staff not signing anything," said Barton. "It was all call-canceled crap that got through and the EMS assessed as billable."

Of the discrepancy, Riley said, "It was just a mistake with billing, it was nothing. We worked it out, there's no money missing."

Other topics mentioned at the meeting include chicken barbecue fundraisers on April 10 for the fire department, a conversation about the condition of a printer, and Delaware Engineering needing either dry or frozen ground before it can begin work on New Berlin's inactive water well.
