Norwich 6th grader takes third at Regional Spelling Bee

NORWICH – Much like her third-round word, Norwich sixth-grader Leona Tyler made an impression Saturday, March 10, during the 16th annual Regional Spelling Bee at SUNY Oneonta.

One of 23 local middle school champions to reach the regional stage at Goodrich Theater, Leona made it to the 10th round and finished third overall.

The Norwich Middle School champ correctly spelled tough words such as “sitzmark” in the third round and “kirtle” in the eighth. A sitzmark is an impression made in the snow by a skier falling backward. A kirtle is a coat worn by men in the Middle Ages.

Leona went on to correctly spell “twilight” in the ninth round but missed “pillar” in the 10th. Defending champion Melodie Loya won the 2018 Regional Spelling Bee with the word “frivolous” in the 15th round. Part of Sidney’s Loving Education At Home program, Melodie earned a trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Norwich City Schools Library Media Specialist Lorraine Chwazik served as Master of Ceremonies. Participants hailed from schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES regions. DCMO BOCES coordinated the event, which was sponsored by The Daily Star and SUNY Oneonta, among others.

Leona advanced to the Regional Spelling Bee with the correct spelling of “mandible” in the 11th round of the NMS competition Jan. 18.
