Troopers announce St. Paddy's Weekend DWI crackdown arrests

CHENANGO – The New York State Police conducted a special crackdown on impaired driving over St. Patrick's Day Weekend, ultimately resulting in 217 statewide arrests for driving while intoxicated.

New York State Police Public Information Officer Agnieszka Dembinska said Troopers made 11 arrests over the weekend in Troop C, which encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties.

Drivers from Binghamton, Chenango, Ithaca, Schenectady, Spencer, Unadilla, Lancaster, Pa., and Beaufort, S.C. were among those arrested in the Troop C region over the weekend.

Dembinska said of the 11 arrests, nine were for driving while intoxicated and two were for driving while impaired by drugs. The maximum fine for an impaired driving charge is $10,000.

The 217 arrests made statewide were a slight decline from the 229 driving while intoxicated arrests issued by state police during the 2017 St. Patrick's Day Weekend. According to state police, St. Patrick's Day ranks among the deadliest holidays due to the number of drunk drivers on the road.

The special enforcement efforts were funded through the Governor Andrew Cuomo's Traffic Safety Committee.
