19th annual Stars and Stripes Classic kicks-off with high school girls action

JOHNSON CITY – Hosted for the 19th year by the Southern Tier Basketball Officials, the Stars and Stripes Classic was underway Tuesday, March 20 at Davis College.

An All-Star like format, the evening included two games with four teams full of select, high-caliber female athletes from 25 different schools throughout Section IV, who took to the court at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

In the first contest, Peak Performance Physical Therapy faced off against The Smith Design General and Cosmetic Dentistry.

Of the players on both teams, Alyssa Sands (Greene), Kaitlyn Furner (Sherburne-Earlville), and Emma Smith (Greene) were among the skilled players that represented Chenango County. They were coached by Greene head coach Dave Gorton as well as assisted by Jeff Barry, Sherburne-Earlville’s head coach.

The three – along with their teammates from schools like Maine-Endwell, Chenango Valley, Owego, Whitney Point and Union-Endicott – put up a hard fight throughout the game, but fell to The Smile Designers by a final of 77-70.

In the loss, Sands went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line for her two points. Smith chipped in five from the inside and Furner finished with seven, including one from long-range.

The second contest of the night was between teams Precision Automotive Services and Leonard Bus Sales Inc.

Triniti Myers (Norwich) was the lone county selected representative on the Precision Automotive team and her talent was joined by some of the leaders from schools such as Horseheads, Elmira, Waverly, and Ithaca.

Team Leonard Bus Sales was filled with Chenango County talent. The roster included Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge-Guilford), Taylor Hansen (Norwich), Abi Selfridge (Bainbridge-Guilford), Halea Eaton (Norwich) and Erica Selfridge (Bainbridge-Guilford).

Other athletes from schools such as Oneonta, Seton Catholic, and Johnson City joined the team coached by Bob Conway and Kim Mayo of Bainbridge-Guilford.

In a battle for the first three quarters of the game, Leonard Bus and Precision Auto went back-and-forth, nearly exchanging basket for basket.

However, midway through the fourth, Leonard Bus Sales went on a run as they began to pull away for the 87-79 victory over Precision Auto.

Abi Selfridge’s 16 paced Leonard Bus Sales. Palmatier added 10 points to also score in double figures. Knocking down two from behind the three-point line, Erica Selfridge tallied eight while teammate Hansen chipped in one point after a two-shot trip to the free-throw line.

Eaton may not have appeared in the scoring column but her presence was known due to dishing out assists as well as her defensive play.

On the opposition, Myers went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line in the first quarter to record one point in the loss for Precision Auto Services.

Julia Oglesby of Unadilla Valley was also invited to play on the Leonard Bus Sales Inc. team, but was unable to attend Tuesday’s action.

All four teams will play again on Thursday, March 22 at Davis College in Johnson City. Precision Auto Services will take on Peak Performance Physical Therapy at 6 p.m. In the 7:30 p.m. championship, Leonard Bus Sales square-off against The Smile Designers.

The boys Stars and Stripes Classic games will take place Wednesday night, March 21, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., also at Davis College. Chenango County representation on the boys side will include Andrew Jackson (Unadilla Valley), Levi Rifanburg (Unadilla Valley), Michael Carson (Norwich), Marcus Cashman (Norwich), Trevor Halaquist (Bainbridge-Guilford), Jason Davis (Oxford), and Tom Palmatier (Bainbridge-Guilford).

The group will make up the team sponsored by the Canasawacta Country Club. They will be joined by other members from Oneonta, Delaware Academy, and Walton schools under the command of Unadilla Valley head coach Matt Osborne.
