Man accused of burglary and assault in violent domestic dispute

NORWICH – A Norwich man allegedly broke into a residence, assaulted a victim, and did so in the presence of a child before being arrested by police early Sunday.

Andre J. Bryant, 32, of Norwich was arrested in the early morning hours of April 2, at around 12:39 a.m., after allegedly forcing his way in an apartment in the City of Norwich and assaulting a female victim. He was also charged with resisting arrest.

Police responded to a 911 call from a minor, who was at the home when the alleged crimes took place.

Bryant was arraigned before Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir Monday afternoon and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $20,000 cash bail.

Bryant is charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony, third-degree assault, a class A misdemeanor, endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, fourth-degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.

"In this case, it is alleged that Bryant forcibly entered the residence and did so with the intent of assaulting the victim therein," reported the the Norwich Police Department.

Bryant was charged with burglary for breaking into the woman's home, assault for allegedly attacking the victim, and endangering the welfare of a child, because the incident took place in front of a minor. The victim was later taken to the Chenango Memorial Hospital and treated for her injuries, reported the NPD.

He was charged with criminal mischief for destroying property. According to court documents, Bryant broke through an external door and then a bedroom door, and destroyed a kitchen cabinet during the break-in. Police also charged Bryant with resisting arrest after he allegedly refused to cooperate with police orders.

The woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance by the Norwich Fire Department.

“The victim was treated at CMH and released,” said Norwich Police Chief Rodney Marsh. “The young child that originally called 911 was not injured during this incident."

Both Norwich City Court Judges, Mike Genute and Patrick Flanagan recused themselves in this case, and Bryant is scheduled to appear in Chenango County Court at a later date.
