Norwich Parks Commission seeks the city's feedback

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Parks Commission seeks input from area residents about the city owned parks, playgrounds, and recreation facilities.

The survey is available to all residents of the greater Norwich area and can be found on the city website at www.norwichnewyork.net

So far over 170 survey responses have been received, but we are seeking at least 100 more. To put this in perspective, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates there are approximately 5,358 households in the City and Towns of Norwich and North Norwich.

The survey is seeking feedback on a variety of topics, including the pool, playgrounds, skating rink, and pavilions. The City’s parks play an important role in the quality of life of the community residents. Whether you live, work, or play in Norwich, the Parks Commission would like to know how you use our parks and what opinions you have about making them better.

Responses will be used to help inform and guide decisions about planning and budgeting for future improvements in the parks.

Here are some of the preliminary results. On the topic of the swimming pool, 60% of respondents to date report using the swimming pool last year, with 25% using it at least 2-3 times per week.

On the question of whether or not a fee should be charged for using the swimming pool if the fees were used to maintain the pool, 52% of area residents say that there should not be a fee. For those who are in favor a fee, 50 cents per day is the most commonly suggested amount.

Concerning creating a new dog park within the city, only 29% of respondents are in favor of a new dog park, but nearly 42% of think that one of the parks should be made dog friendly, where dogs are allowed off-leash.

The most agreement can be found on reserving pavilions. 65% of respondents think that the City should allow residents to reserve a pavilion, with only 13% opposing it. 48% are in favor of paying a fee to reserve a pavilion for 4 hours, with 42% of people opposed to a fee. Twenty dollars for four hours is the most common suggested dollar amount.

Whether you agree or disagree with these results, your opinion only counts if you take the survey!

The survey is anonymous and can be completed in less than ten minutes. Most questions are multiple choice, but there is also space to provide written comments. The deadline to submit your responses is June 1, 2018.

The Parks Commission meets the fourth Wednesday of the month (excluding December, July and August) at 7pm on the DPW facility on Hale St. and meetings are open to the public. Questions can be directed to the Parks Commission Chair, Chris Sprague via the Deputy City Clerk at 334-1201.
