Owners of Rydzy's Market announce store's closing

EARLVILLE – Five years after transitioning what was formerly the Little M into Rydzy's Market, Ed and Diane Rydzy have announced the Earlville mom-and-pop shop will be closing its doors for good on May 18.

Ed said the decision to call it quits was prompted by a number of things, namely their struggle to keep up with the payment of taxes and the fact that larger discount stores are beginning to move into the area.

"200 meters down the road Dollar General is moving in, and that's it for us," said Ed. "They sell cigarettes, they sell grocery. Them coming in––they basically do the old Dracula stake through the heart thing. And our bills are just horrible...No breaks for the small businessman."

Diane said unlike those larger stores, Rydzy's Market is unable to buy its products in bulk, making it difficult to be competitive. Nevertheless, the Rydzys have strived to make Rydzy's Market a unique place in Earlville.

"We've done everything," said Ed. "We sell comics now. It's like a mini Wal-Mart."

The Rydzys purchased Little M – which existed at its location of 8 East Main Street for 45 years before becoming Rydzy's Market – from former owner Wayne Foster in 2013. Ed said it was their hope to make Rydzy's Market a one-stop shop for customers, even going as far as adding a comic book section and, last year, a fully functional deli in the market.

"Everything we could do, we did for this store," said Ed. "There's nothing we can do. I just want people in town to know we kicked and screamed as much as we could."

The Rydzys said it was their hope to offer unique amenities at the market that other corporate shops don't, by accepting EBT cards, all forms of credit card, and even allowing customers to charge their accounts.

"It's a small town, you figure, 'Let's help people out,'" said Diane. "We donate to every function. Churches, the library, the Earlville Opera House, the fire department––anyone who walks in here asking for a donation."

Ed said depending on how much inventory the market is able to sell before May 18, the Rydzys are tentatively planning a goodbye celebration on May 19 to thank its customers by giving away free pizza and hotdogs.

"We'll open the door, cook out of the oven and hand people stuff, say, 'Look around, say bye to 50 years,'" said Ed. "We're not trying to chastise the town, we know they did all they can. But small mom-and-pop stores––we're just going under."
