Sea Dogs “Un-Nabil” to Solve Crismatt, Rumble Ponies win 4-3

BINGHAMTON – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies scored one run in four different innings Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium, propelling them to a 4-3 victory and an opening-series sweep against the Portland Sea Dogs. Rumble Ponies starter Nabil Crismatt led the charge, at one point retiring 13 hitters in a row for his first-ever Double-A win.
Playing second-inning small ball, Binghamton scored the game’s first run and would lead wire-to-wire. After singles from Tomas Nido and Kevin Taylor, Jhoan Urena’s fly out to deep right field pushed both Ponies baserunners into scoring position. John Mora got the job done, bringing in Nido with a groundout to second base.
Mora was the only factor in Binghamton’s second run. His fourth-inning two-run blast snuck inside the right-field foul pole to give the Rumble Ponies a 2-0 advantage. Mora’s first home run of 2018 was Binghamton’s fourth.
Meanwhile, Crismatt (1-0) motored through the Sea Dogs lineup after allowing a game-opening double to Cole Sturgeon. The 23-year-old Columbian settled in to retire 18 of the final 19 batters he faced, with the lone Sea Dog reaching on an Andrew Ely error. Crismatt lasted six frames and struck out nine without allowing a walk.
After a Jhoan Urena sacrifice fly extended the Rumble Ponies lead in the sixth inning, Peter Alonso tacked on an important insurance run in the seventh inning. The Rumble Ponies first baseman launched his second home run of the season, clearing the fence in left-center field.
Mike Shawaryn (0-1) made his Double-A debut, lasting 4.2 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. He hemorrhaged the Rumble Ponies first two tallies.
Despite being blanked through the first seven innings, the Sea Dogs rallied for three runs off of the Binghamton bullpen in the eighth inning. Portland used four consecutive hits - three doubles and a single - to plate a trio of tallies off relievers Daniel Zamora and Drew Smith.
Smith retired the side in order in the ninth inning to earn his first save of 2018.
Following Friday’s postponement due to weather, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies scored four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Tomas Nido, in a 5-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton relievers Eric Hanhold and Tyler Bashlor retired all eleven Sea Dogs they faced to secure Binghamton’s second straight win.
After Peter Alonso tied the game at two with an RBI double against Portland starter Dedgar Jimenez in the fifth, the Sea Dogs dipped into pen. Southpaw Daniel McGrath plunked Patrick Mazeika to fill the bases for Nido. The Rumble Ponies catcher zipped the first pitch he saw to the warning track to give the Rumble Ponies the lead for good.
Binghamton’s bullpen made the lead the stick. Hanhold capped 1-2/3 innings perfect innings of relief with a spotless sixth and Tyler Bashlor set down all six batters he faced. Corey Taylor surrendered a run in the ninth, but earned his first save of the season.
The Rumble Ponies had to play catchup after Portland jumped on the board against Andrew Church. Josh Tobias launched a solo home run in the second before Esteban Quiroz added a solo shot in the third. Hanhold took over in the fifth and stranded two runners before the Ponies grabbed the lead in the fifth.
Church struck out six and allowed two runs on six hits over 4-1/3 innings in the no-decision. Hanhold collected the victory in his Double-A debut.
Jimenez (0-1) was touched for four runs over 4-2/3 innings in the loss.
Binghamton (3-0) continues their week-long homestand by welcoming in the Akron Rubberducks on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Marcos Molina takes the hill against RHP Shao-Ching Chiang.
