NORWICH – Both the Norwich Boys and Girls Track and Field teams dominated their first meet of the season as the Purple hosted the Windsor Black Knights Tuesday.
Making his return to a sporting event since injuring his knee in the fall during a football game, Zack Race looked as if that injury never occurred. Race took both 100 meter and 200 meter races with a highly competitive field of sprinters. Of that field was his teammate, Eric Conant, placing second in both events.
Race and Conant were joined by teammates David Burger and Scott Tomanocy to win the 400 meter relay with a time of 44 seconds.
In the 400 meter, Tomanocy scored another Norwich win in the 400 meter event with a time of 54.4.
Norwich’s Gabe Gawronski continued his track success from the winter indoor season by winning the 800 meter, 1600 meter and was a part of the 1600 meter relay team. Nik Barber, Noah Bufalini, Stanton Baker and Gawronksi won with a time of 3:52.
In the field events, the Purple Tornado took all but one event in the meet.
Zach Lowe score Norwich points with a winning shot put throw of 41-feet-1-inch. Conant took the long jump with a distance of 19-feet-6.25-inches. Berger vaulted the top height of 8-feet-6-inches in the pole vault. First year varsity jumper Elijiah Craddock took first in the triple jump and the high jump.
On the girls side, Nicole Jeffrey picked up where she left off after last season, winning all events she participated in during the meet. Earning first-place finishes in the 800 meter, 1500 meter, and the 3000 meter events, Jeffrey joined Katie Gawronski, Hailey Colabelli, and Jada Reynolds for the 3200 meter relay.
Gawronski, Jeffrey and Colabelli are all returners from last season’s Section IV championship team as well as the school record holder in the event. Reynolds fills the vacancy left by Megan Komendarek.
Gawronkski finished the night with all first’s as well, winning both hurdles events and also participating in the 1600 meter relay team.
The other members of the 1600 meter relay were Colabelli, Delilah Geislinger, and Riley Marsh.
Colabelli raced in only relays in the meet but was a part of all first-place teams. As a part of the 400 meter relay, Colabelli as well as Geislinger, Emily Shattuck, and Caroline Stewart finished with a time of 53.9.
Shattuck finished in first in the 200 meter race on the track and long jump in the field events, Stewart took the triple jump while Liz Karlson threw a distance of 71-feet-2-inches for first in the discus and Angela Carlson jumped 4-feet-6-inches to win the high jump.
Norwich’s Track and Field team are due at a meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. According to the schedule, the location is to be determined.
