Jason Ricci & JJ Appleton to perform at CAC
NORWICH — On the heels of a blistering 2018 Chenango Blues Festival appearance, bluesharp flamethrower Jason Ricci and side pal JJ Appleton are still hitting the touring trail hard with a blues-driven acoustic appearance on April 21 at the Chenango Arts Council's (CAC) Kappel Theater, Norwich.
While many a Blues Fest die-hard can recall catching Ricci in action along the Blues circuit with either one of his former supporting acts—The New Blood or The Bad Kind—the Spring performance at the historic 515-seat former high school auditorium in downtown Norwich will be a first for both Ricci, Appleton, and first act The Nate Gross Band slated for 7 p.m.
The award-winning blues harp master and internationally touring singer/songwriter/guitarist will be joined by bassist Derek Nievergelt, a Berklee College of Music alumni and accomplished soundtrack producer.
Keeping alive an American musical tradition while bringing a 21st century sound to songs that speak to the heart and soul of Americana blues, Ricci and Appleton’s collaboration is a stand-up-and-shout force to be reckoned with—a performance that will have you screaming for more.
Ricci, well known as the top harp player of his generation, has worked with legendary blues artists like Johnny Winter, RL Burnside, Walter Trout, Susan Tedeschi, and Otis Taylor, as well as being a headliner at blues festivals and clubs worldwide. His appearance with Zac Brown and Tom Morello as the featured harp player for Paul Butterfield’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction was aired on HBO, and his performance on Johnny Winter’s Step Back album was nominated for a Grammy, and in February Ricci was nominated for both Rock Blues Artist and best Harmonica Instrumentalist of 2018 by the US Blues Foundation.
Appleton’s varied musical career as a touring/recording artist and producer includes working with Keb ‘Mo, Kesha, Jamie Cullum, Ashford & Simpson, Maya Angelou, and Leslie West. He was signed to Universal/UK as a rock artist and has toured extensively throughout the US and UK.
Nievergelt studied under legendary bassist Ron Carter at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and has toured internationally with trumpeter Terence Blanchard and recorded on Blanchard’s Grammy-nominated album, Let’s Get Lost.
Opening the show is local favorite The Nate Gross Band. From the Taste of Country Music Festival, with an audience of 30,000+, to touring up and down the east coast, Nate has played for some of the best audiences a musician could hope for. Sharing the stage with Dickey Betts, Anders Osbourne, Honey Island Swamp Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Commander Cody, The Kentucky Headhunters, Blackberry Smoke, and many more, Gross & company—which include Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Bobby Tousignant and rock steady bass brother Ben Gross—have paid their dues along the way and earned a rightful place in the regional and local blues scene.
Additionally, The Nate Gross Band is featured in 2018’s Chenango Blues Fest and Syracuse Blues Fest lineups.
General admission ticket prices are $25 with discounts for students ($10), members, and seniors, and can be pre-purchased at ChenangoArts.org or by calling the CAC box office at 607-336-ARTS.
