Crimson Knights take both in double-header with B-G
BAINBRIDGE – Afton defeated Bainbridge-Guilford in both games of a MAC league double-header played in Bainbridge on Saturday, winning 9-5 and 16-6.
In the first game of the day, Afton’s top four of the batting order shined as they combined for eight of the team’s nine runs while their starter Colin Nabinger struck out 11 in six innings of work on the mound.
Afton led 4-2 after the first three innings. In the fifth, the Crimson Knights tacked on two and added another one in the sixth.
By the top of the seventh, the Bobcats trailed 9-3. Needing to get their bats going to produce runs, B-G scored two but were unable to add any additional offense.
The Bobcats Evan Hyzer had a hit in each of his four plate appearances. Hyzer scored twice in the game.
B-G’s Trevor Halaquist started for the Bobcats in game one, striking out seven Afton batters while allowing five hits.
Nabinger, part of the top four batter for the Crimson Knights, help himself on the mound as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, batting in two runs and crossing the plate twice himself.
His catcher, Vincent Caiati scored twice in the game, going 1-for-1 at the plate while being walked in three at-bats. Teammates Damion Relyea, Tyler King also scored two runs apiece.
Afton’s Antonio Derrigo had the best day offensively in the first game as he recorded RBI’s, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Derrigo batted in the five spot for the Crimson Knights and Zach Alford scored one run as the ninth batter.
Nabinger allowed five hits and three unearned runs for the Crimson Knights. Caiati moved from behind the plate to the mound to get the save.
In the second game, Afton and Bainbridge-Guilford matched run for run until the Crimson Knights took the lead in the fourth. The team then tacked on two in the fifth and eight in the sixth on their way to a 16-6 win.
Afton’s eighth-grader, Brady Buttice, hit 3-for-3 with four RBI’s and two runs scored while his teammate King lined a shot for a home run.
Every player in the Afton lineup reached base at least once as Crimson Knights’ had 14 hits as a team in the second game. Derrigo recorded three RBI’s and a run scored.
Relyea, Nabinger and King each had three hits and two RBI’s.
Bobcats’ Halaquist hit 3-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in while teammate and game two starting pitcher Tom Palmatier scored three runs.
Palmatier took the loss for B-G, pitching five innings and allowing 10 hits and eight runs while striking out four Afton batters.
Derrigo got the win on the mound, allowing three hits and one run in his two innings of relief.
Caiati got the start in game two. B-G produced five hits, five runs and two walks but Caiati struck out four before finishing the game behind the plate.
