Tornado tennis wins fourth match of season with strong play
BINGHAMTON – Despite the 6-1 overall score that showed, the match win for Norwich over Chenango Valley was much closer. The Purple Tornado team was able to hold on for set wins, leading to the STAC match win on the road Friday.
Winning his first match of the season was Josiah Shaver at first singles. Shaver was down early in the first set before rallying four straight games to take the first set 6-3. He then cruised through the second set for a win of 6-2, getting his first match win of the season.
In the only three set battle of the night, Zayne Harper lost the first set but bounced back in the second, blanking his opponent James Wyatt 6-0 and tying the match at 1-1.
Harper trailed early in the third set before losing 6-3 to Wyatt, giving Chenango Valley their only point of the match.
Cruising to a win in straight sets was third singles Joel Fazio. Fazio defeated Owen Gillette of the Warriors with a final of 6-1 in both sets, grabbing the second point for Norwich.
Remaining undefeated was fourth singles Matt Giglio for the Purple. Playing a tight first set, Giglio grabbed a 6-4 win. Taking the momentum from the first set, Giglio outplayed his opponent, easily taking the second set with a final of 6-3.
Playing a solid match to remain undefeated as well were both the first and second doubles team of Norwich.
Austin Benenati and Nathan Christopherson won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4, bringing home the fourth and deciding point of the match.
Zac Marsh and Carson Maynard topped their doubles opponents in straight sets also, winning 6-4 and 6-2.
The final point for Norwich was earned with strong play by the third doubles team of Jahlil Jones and Jonathan Ryan. After playing a really good first set, the two took down CV’s James Hart and Lucas Hoyt 6-2.
The second set was not won easily as the two teams ended the set in a tie breaker set. Norwich’s Jones and Ryan were loose and made good shots when needed, according to head coach John Stewart, to win the set with a 7-2 tie breaker score.
Norwich hosts Chenango Valley Monday afternoon. “Even though the score seemed lopsided, this is going to be a close match,” said Stewart. “We had a hit around on Sunday to be better prepared.”
Action is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
