Comeback bid for Crimson Knight falls short to Bulldogs on walk-off walk
BAINBRIDGE – With the game coming down to the last play, the Delhi Bulldogs won 7-6 with a walk-off walk on Saturday, taking the MAC league win despite the Afton Crimson Knights’ valiant comeback in the top of the six.
Delhi’s Erik Gullow drew the walk with the bases loaded to score teammate Connor Ferguson. Gullow looked at four straight balls, handing Afton’s Tyler King the loss.
Leading 2-1 after the first inning, Afton made it 3-1 when Kyle Grover scored on an error in the second.
Delhi added a single run with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Alex Taylor in the bottom of the third.
The teams then went scoreless in the fourth behind starters of both teams.
In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor ripped a line drive triple, scoring two Bulldogs and giving the home team on the scoreboard a 6-3 lead.
Not going down without a fight was Afton’s Zack Alford, as he answered with a bases-loaded triple in the top of the sixth, batting in three to tie the game at 6-6.
Delhi’s Devon Kilmer came in to pitch the seventh. His defense behind him turned a double-play to get out of the inning, not allowing an Afton baserunner to score. Kilmer ultimately earned the win due to game winning walk in the bottom of the inning.
Gullow and teammate Jack Stanton each had two hits for Delhi while Stanton recorded two RBIs. Colin Nabinger, Grover, and Alford all hit doubles in the loss for the Crimson Knights.
Afton travels to Sidney on Monday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
