Purple Tornado tennis stays hot, remains on top of division

NORWICH – Norwich topped Chenango Valley in back-to-back matches, winning the second in a 7-0 sweep Monday afternoon.
The match of the night belonged to Norwich’s Zayne Harper. When the Purple and Chenango Valley matched up last Friday, Harper lost to James Wyatt in three sets. Head coach John Stewart tweaked Harper’s game plan for the second match.
Using the changes, Harper cruised through in straight sets (6-0 and 6-4) and took the fourth point win , securing the team match win for the Tornado. “Harper’s [match] was a great match to watch,” said Stewart. “He stuck to the game plan and finished strong.”
Josiah Shaver at first singles for the Purple was trailing most of the first set but was able to tie the set up at 6-6. Forcing a tie breaker to determine the winner of the set, Shaver took the extra tennis with a score of 7-5. Shaver went up early in the second set.
Having to fight off a late surge by CV’s Carter Wilson to hold on, Shaver won the match with a 6-4 second and in straight sets.
Matt Giglio of the Purple struggled late in both sets but hung on to win in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-5. Giglio has yet to give up a set this season as he is 12-0 in sets.
Third doubles Jahlil Jones and Jonathan Ryan fought a late charge by Chenango Valley’s James Hart and Henry Stroka in the third set to win the seventh point of the match, giving Norwich the sweep.
Joel Fazio easily handled his opponent, winning in straight sets.
Also winning in straight sets were first doubles Austin Benenati and Nathan Christopherson and second doubles partners Carson Maynard and Zac Marsh.
“We finally had good weather and it brought out our best play of the season,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “In the first match, CV was missing their first and third players and the scores were tight. With CV back to full strength, beating them in a sweep shows we were ready to play.”
Norwich takes a trip down Route 12 to face Vestal for a non-league match at Tioga Hills with a start time of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
