Oxford suffers tough losses on back-to-back days
OXFORD – The visiting Unatego Spartans were held scoreless by the Oxford Blackhawks in the first inning but scored multiple runs in every frame after as they went earned the 21-1 road win Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans started the scoring in the second as they recorded five runs in the inning against Oxford’s starting pitcher Nick Cirello. In the third, Unatego added another five, making it 10-0 early.
Unatego Sophomore Jacob Marshall hit for the cycle during the game. Marshall, lacking only the homerun in his final at-bat of the contest, sent the ball over the fence to compete the cycle.
The Blackhawks were able to record seven hits in the game as Brad Beckwith, Matt Roach and Cirello each had two hits in their appearances at the plate.
Teammate Even Eldred added a single in the fourth inning, which resulted in an RBI that scored Cirello from third following his lead-off triple.
Connor Griffin got the start for the Spartans and earned the win while he also had a big day at the plate with a double and a home run.
On Monday, Oxford could not contain the Harpursville Hornets as the visiting team took home a 29-3 win.
The Hornets scored 10 in their first plate appearance of the game, including a grand slam by Greg Akulis.
Oxford, however, was able to hold Harpursville scoreless in the fifth inning.
In the third inning, the Blackhawks went on a two-out, three run rally. Oxford’s Beckwith reached on an error following his fly ball hit. Teammate Jason Davis advanced Beckwith on a line drive single.
Sean Smith, the next batter for the Blackhawks, sent a fly ball to the outfield and reach first to give himself a single and a RBI as Beckwith crossed home plate.
Levi Bennett then stepped up to the plate and ripped a ground ball towards the shortstop. Just out of the fielder’s reach, Bennett was scored with a single while Davis and Smith moved one base up.
Cirello hit a fly ball to right field in the next at-bat, sending both Davis and Smith home as runs two and three for Oxford.
In the bottom of the first, Roach and Beckwith also had one hit each for the Blackhawks at the plate, giving Oxford a total of six between the two innings.
Akulis was credited with the victory for Harpursville. He lasted two innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out four and walking one.
Oxford will have Wednesday and Thursday off before traveling to Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday for another MAC league matchup. Game time for the Blackhawks and Bobcats is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
