Lady Blackhawks’ comeback attempt falls short to Walton; B-G holds on for ninth win of season
WALTON – The Lady Blackhawks had a five-run inning, grabbing a 8-3 lead in the top of the third, but two runs from the Walton Warriors in the fourth cut the lead to two.
In the bottom of the sixth, Walton scored five to take their first lead of the game, pulling ahead for the remainder of the contest to win 10-9 over visiting Oxford Thursday afternoon.
Oxford faced two outs with the bases loaded in their last plate appearance of the game when Trinity Vargas was sent to the plate to pinch hit. Vargas lined a shot to center, scoring teammate Eleni Spyratos one run in the top of the seventh.
Jessie Howe stepped up to the batter’s box facing the same situation but Walton’s shortstop caught Howe’s line drive, ending the comeback bid for the Blackhawks.
Both teams scored three runs in the first frame, tying the score before a scoreless second inning.
Blackhawks’ Allison Beckwith threw nine strikeouts in seven innings of work in the pitching circle. She allowed nine hits with six earned runs in the loss. Despite those numbers, Beckwith pitched a great game with 29 of her first pitches to batters were strikes.
At the plate, Beckwith went 2-for-3 with two runs scores while teammate Caitlyn Quigley had two hits also. Spyratos and Lexi Kohlhepp each had one hit but were for extra-bases. Spyratos hit for a double while Kohlhepp reached third on her hit.
Kylee Wiggans of Walton pitched a complete game and had nine strikeouts for the win.
Oxford is on the road again Friday as they travel to face Bainbridge-Guilford at 4:30 p.m.

Bainbridge-Guilford 7, Harpursville 6
HARPURSVILLE – Bainbridge-Guilford built a seven-run lead in the top of the fourth inning but the Lady Hornets of Harpursville charged back, nearly completing the comeback Thursday. The Bobcats however held on for a 7-6 victory, their ninth win of the season.
B-G scored three in the third and built their lead to seven following a two-run homer by Molly O’Hara in the fourth that also scored Bailey Hart. Hart brought in Alexis Carr from third on a RBI single before O’Hara went deep in the next at bat.
Jill Cannistra also picked up a RBI in the frame with a line drive double to centerfield, scoring Marissa Cuozzo.
Harpursville, however, put together two three run innnings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, threatening the Bobcats’ lead.
Morgan Neidig, who came in for starter Kori Thornton in the fifth inning, shut down the Hornets in the sixth inning as she rung up the three batters. Nearly doing the same in the seventh, Neidig allowed one hit in the inning but no runs to hold on for the win.
Neidig stuck out three batters in three innings on the mound. Thornton recorded five strikeouts in her four innings of work to start the contest.
Both offenses were strong at the plate as Bainbridge-Guilford racked up ten hits to Harpursville’s eight.
Harley Bunker took the loss for Harpursville, pitching the whole game She gave up seven runs while striking out three.
Megan Palmatier and Hart each collected two hits to lead the Bobcats at the plate, each hitting a double in one their at-bats while Cannistra and Neidig also hit a double. Carr hit a triple in the big fourth inning for B-G.
The Bobcats will face Oxford at home on Friday afternoon before hosting their annual SFCU tournament on Saturday. Sherburne-Earlville is one of the local teams included in the four team field.
