Norwich takes loss Sus Valley in another one run game; Blackhawks’ comeback stopped two runs shy
CONKLIN – After being tied at 3-3 for four innings, Norwich tacked on another run to lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth. However, the Susquehanna Valley Sabers responded by adding two in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 lead.
The Sabers lead stuck for the final two innings of play, taking the win over the visiting Purple Tornado Thursday.
Sus Valley was threatening to score in the bottom of the sixth when Max Huffman sent Justin Bates’ pitch right field with runners on second and third.
The Tornado’s Brayden Supensky dove for the Huffman screamer, coming up with a web game play to save two runs and keeping it withing reach for the Purple in their last at-bat.
The Sabers, however, ended the game with with three straight outs in the top of the seventh.
Norwich got things moving in the first inning, when J.T. Vinal doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring Mike Trevisani from first for one run. Vinal advanced to third on a bad throw, putting him in scoring position for the next batter, Marcus Cashman.
Cashman sent a fly ball to left field, scoring Vinal and resulting in a double. Norwich’s A.J. Little then singled on a 0-2 count out to left field, sending Cashman home for the third run of the inning.
The game was tied at four with Susquehanna Valley batting in the bottom of the fifth when Zach Taro singled on scoring the second run for the frame to take the lead.
Matt Smith pitched the Sabers to victory. He allowed one hit and zero runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one.
Cashman took the loss for Norwich. He went five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out six. Cashman led Norwich at the plate, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI’s.
Vinal and Little went for 1-for-3 with an RBI also. The Purple Tornado out hit the Sabers with six hits to the home teams five.
Norwich is scheduled to host Chenango Valley Friday at 4:30 p.m. In the last meeting between the two teams, CV nabbed a 6-3 win.

WALTON – The Blackhawks mustered up four runs in the their final at-bats, but Oxford’s rally was stopped to runs shy of tying the Walton Warriors, ending with an 8-6 loss on the road Thursday.
The seventh inning scoring started with the Blackhawks’ G Rowe being hit by a pitch. Nick Cirello was also hit by a pitch, putting two Oxford runners on the base paths with no outs.
Matt Roach hit a screamer to Walton’s second baseman, who was unable to to field the ball cleanly, and reached first while both Rowe and Cirello crossed home plate.
Then Brad Beckwith’s singled to give the Blackhawks runners on first and second for the second time in the frame.
Garrett Depew grounded out for the first out of the inning but was able to advance Oxford into scoring position. Jason Davis’ ground ball to the third baseman of the Warriors was mishandled, scoring Beckwith for the fourth run of the inning. Roach scored earlier in Davis’ at bat on a wild pitch.
Davis, however, was left stranded at first after Sean Smith struck out and Evan Eldred flied out to left field for the final two outs of the game.
The Warriors led 7-1 after four, before Oxford added another run in the fifth. Walton responded to the run in the bottom of the sixth, leading 8-2 and believing they had secured the win.
“We showed some life,” said Blackhawks’ head coach Chris Palmer. “We didn’t go down easy.”
Beckwith had a big day at the plate for Oxford, going 4-for-4 with one RBI and a double while scoring twice in the game.
Roach didn’t record a hit in the game but still picked up two RBI’s by making contact on the ball, forcing errors in his at-bats. He and Depew shared time on the mound, combining for four strikeouts against the Walton batters.
Nick Lamoreaux went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Warriors, scoring one run in the game. Teammate Joey Yambor had two hits in three at-bats, crossing home plate three time in the win at home.
Oxford will travel to Bainbridge-Guilford Friday afternoon for another MAC Conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
