Tornado bats come alive in big win over Warriors
NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado diamond men came alive right from the get go as they pummeled the visiting Chenango Valley Warriors 9-1 Friday afternoon.
The economical pitching from Michael Trevisani had the CV batters off their game, as the senior hurler had a complete game five-hitter on 79 pitches to record Norwich’s third win on the year.
While Trevisani’s pitching was on, his defense in the field was superb.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, it looked as though the Warriors would finally put a dent into the Tornado lead but CV’s batter Joey Testani hit into a rare 1-2-3 double play.
Mike Trevisani fielded a screamer and threw it to catcher J.T. Vinal to snag the force out at home. Vinal then turned on a dime and threw it to first baseman AJ Little, nabbing the speedy Testani at first base.
The next batter Jackson Retzlaft grounded out to the second baseman Marcus Cashman and the Tornado’s lead remained unscathed.
The hitting was on point for the Tornado as they produced good at bats. Several Tornado batters drew full counts, working the Warriors pitchers ragged while fighting off payoff pitch after payoff pitch.
In the fourth inning, the big bats of Vinal and Cashman came up huge as the Tornado scored three runs.
Vinal hit an RBI double into the left center field gap, scoring Trevisani all the way from first.
Next up was Cashman, who drilled a beautiful ground-rule double down the left field line, scoring Vinal. Cashman later crossed home plate on a passed ball by the CV catcher Dominic Francavilla.
“J.T. [Vinal] and Marcus [Cashman] have really been hitting the ball well, and they continued that tonight” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “We can hit, we’ve been aggressive at the plate” continued Turnbull, noting of the 11 hits by Norwich offense.
Vinal went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI’s and two runs scored.
The Purple Tornado look to keep the good mojo going at they play Monday at 4:30 at Veterans Field in Norwich as they host Susquehanna Valley in a STAC contest.
