Chenango County Democrats endorse Newman for Supreme Court

CHENANGO – The Chenango County Democratic Committee has announced their endorsement of attorney Claudette Newman for Supreme Court Justice.

Democratic Chairmen Patrick McNeil said the committee recognized Newman’s extensive experience and knowledge of the supreme court, making her the best candidate.

The vacant position was previously held by Kevin M. Dowd, who retired at the end of 2017. Newman worked as a legal assistant to the former supreme court judge for 18 years. She continues to serve the court, as it's principal law clerk.

As law clerk, Newman provides legal analysis, research and writing on a wide variety of civil litigation. A key component of her job includes ensuring the correct legal processes are observed by the court, and coordinating communication from the court to attorneys and litigants. As a result, she has extensive experience working with numerous counties throughout the Sixth Judicial District, explained McNeil.

Speaking in support of Newman, Dowd said, “There is no candidate, Republican or Democrat, who is as qualified as Claudette to assume this most important of judicial positions.”

“The people of the Sixth Judicial District deserve the best possible person to be their justice and she is that person,” he said.

The ten counties of the Sixth Judicial District, in which the new judge will seek election, are Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins.

Newman also has experience on the bench as a town justice for the last six years. In that capacity she presided over criminal offenses, as well as civil matters.

In selecting Newman, McNeil said her judicial temperament was very important to the Democratic committee and crucial for a supreme court justice.

Newman has spent her entire career working out of Chenango County. She began her legal career as an attorney in private practice handling civil and criminal cases. Newman is a past president, vice president and secretary of the Chenango County Bar Association, and a founding member of the New York State Women’s Bar Association's Chen-Del-O Chapter. She also served as a special referee for the Sixth Judicial District.

Newman expressed appreciation to the Chenango County Democratic Committee for their support.

“I understand how important this judicial position is and the great responsibility that comes with it. I would not seek to be elected if I did not truly believe, I am the candidate with the qualifications needed to best serve all the people of the Sixth Judicial District,” said Newman.
