School boards discuss reaching out to students
GREENE – The Chenango County School Board Association held its annual Spring Dinner on Thursday, and its keynote speaker suggested members stop blaming millennials and start teaching students to be leaders.
The meeting took place at The Silo, a restaurant in Greene, and it was attended by board members from Chenango County, and school staff from neighboring counties.
"Millennials are the Frankenstein monster we created," said New York State School Board Member Relations Manager Patrick Longo. "It's easy to blame a generation for everything, but we have to be the change we want to see in the world."
Longo said it's easier to blame the younger generations than to teach them, and it's up to our school boards to influence their schools into making future leaders.
He asked the board members, "Do you remember the saying, 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.'"
"Teach your students to fish, and they'll be a better captain," he said.
According to Longo, schools need to prioritize leadership in their school board sessions, and consider how their decisions will impact students 15 years in the future.
He said board members need to focus on the future, use their influence on their communities, and start everything off by focusing on improving their schools.
"Your teachers will set the tone for generations, and you can influence them with how you set your budgeting," he said.
He also warned members avoid dependency on government aid, and try to be self sufficient whenever possible.
Longo said board members have a massive responsibility, especially as many of them work full-time jobs and children in school districts or at home.
"The belief systems you have, will likely become the belief systems of you children," he said.
