Unadilla Valley clinches first win in three years with five runs in the eighth inning; Complete game helps Marauders win

OXFORD – Unadilla Valley snatched the lead in the extra inning of baseball needed to determine the outcome between the Storm and the host Oxford Blackhawks. UV was able to hold onto their 10-5 advantage for the win Tuesday, the program’s first game in three years.

The game was tied at five at end of the regulation play after Oxford rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

UV’s Colby Moore made an outstanding throw home to get the second out of the inning, preventing Oxford’s Jason Davis from scoring the winning run and sending the game to extra innings.

Batting in the top of the eighth, the Storm batters drew five walks and picked up two singles in their five run rally to take the lead back for good.

Oxford’s Nick Cirello was the only Blackhawk able to muster up anything in the bottom of the same frame as Cameron Osborne of the Storm faced four batters to end the game.

The Blackhawks took an early lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs. The Storm, however answered by scoring four runs. The of those runs came with Payton Stirone’s three-run home run in the frame that scored Colin Grant and Teddy Postma.

Grant got the start on the rubber for Unadilla Valley and lasted four innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out six Oxford batters.

Matt Roach led things off on the hill for Oxford. He went four innings, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out two.

Garrett Depew and Jason Davis entered the game as relief, throwing three innings and one inning respectively.

Payton Stirone went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Unadilla Valley Storm Varsity in hits, including his home run in the top of the third.

Brad Beckwith, Cirello, and Depew each had two hits at the plate for the Blackhawks while Sean Smith, Davis and Roach recorded one.

“We kept our heads in the game after Oxford tied it in the bottom of the seventh inning,” said Storm head coach Matt Osborne. “Andrew Jackson and Cameron Osborne pitched a great game in relief of Colin Grant. Grant was solid on the mound. Payton Stirone’s three-run home run was a huge boost for our offense.”

The Storm will travel to Unatego on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. start against the Spartans while the Blackhawks will wait until Thursday before they travel to Afton.

Sherburne-Earlville 7, Clinton 2

CLINTON – Marauders’ Ben Osborne pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out seven Clinton batters as Sherburne-Earlville picked up their second win of the season, defeating the Warriors 7-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Sherburne-Earlville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play. They were able to score at least one run in all but three frames.

The Marauders, who have really had their bats going all season, recording nine hits for game. S-E’s Gabe Irwin was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. His teammate Kyle Cole also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI’s.

“We finally played a complete game against Clinton,” said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Jay Tackabury. “Ben [Osborne] pitched a great game, keeping Clinton’s hitters off balance. Our defense played the best it has all season, and I like our aggressiveness at the plate. I’m proud of the effort we showed on the field.”

Last Friday, the Marauders lost to the Holland Patent Golden Knights with final of 7-4 as their defense in the field struggled.

S-E recorded four errors that led to Holland Patent runners crossing the plate.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Marauders scored their first run of the game but Holland Patent answered with two more runs score in the top of the next inning. The Golden Knights capped off their scoring with an additional three runs in the sixth frame.

Sherburne-Earlville was able to rally for three runs in the in the bottom of the sixth inning but their offense was shut down in their last at-bats of the game.

“Dawson Lagoe pitched solid for us but the story again was our defense,” said Tackabury following Friday’s contest. “ Holland Patent’s pitcher threw very well against us. He changed speeds very well and hit his spots. It took us a few innings to get our timing down.

“I’m proud that when our team gets behind that we don’t die and continue to play, to fight. Hopefully we can put it all together soon and play a complete baseball game.”

In the game, Cole again had two hits in three plate appearances with a double and an RBI.

Sherburne-Earlville is in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Mount Markham for a 4:30 p.m. game time.
