Bobcats use late game single to clinch dramatic victory; Norwich sends statement to STAC with big win over Windsor
BAINBRIDGE – In the bottom of the ninth, Bobcats’ Haiden Burns faced a 1-0 count in his at-bat. Burns then sent the second pitch he saw to right field. The line drive was good enough to send home his teammate, Thomas Palmatier, giving Burns the walk-single win to take down the Walton Warriors
In the high scoring affair, Bainbridge-Guilford built a six-run lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven runs in the frame. Singles by Evan Hyzer, Trevor Halaquist, and Palmatier, a walk by Parker Luca and Jon Castle, and a double by Cody Ferrera produced the big offensive inning for the Bobcats.
Walton, however, sent the game was to extra innings after the Warriors tacked on six runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 10-10.
Joseph Yambor of Walton singled on a fly ball sent to center, driving in two teammates and tying the game. Palmatier came in for relief following Yambor’s hit and walked the first batter he saw, putting runners on first and second.
Yambor moved into scoring position as the possible winning run as he went third on a passed ball. He was unable to score as Palmatier forced Caleb Stanton to ground out, ending the final inning of regulation.
Hyzer was called on to start for Bainbridge-Guilford, pitching five innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four. Teammates Garrett Ives, Castle and Palmatier came on in relief. Castle was awarded the win.
The Bobcats got to Walton’s start Brendan McCormack early, scoring three runs in his three innings on the mound. Nolan Church and Ethyn Church entered the game as relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings each to finish the game. Ethyn Church was scored with the loss.
Halaquist went 2-for-5 at the plate to lead Bainbridge-Guilford. The Bobcats recorded a total of eight stolen bases. Hyzer and Palmatier led the way with three.
On Tuesday, both the Trojans and Bainbridge-Guilford were strong on the mound and nearly equal at the plate but it was Greene’s 5-6 hitting advantage that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 victory on Tuesday.
The Trojans’ Trenton Rapp used his single in the bottom of the third to get on base an error in the next at-bat to advance up a base. Then teammate, Nick Shoemaker, hit one of his two doubles to right field, scoring Rapp from second for the lone run in the contest.
Trevor Halaquist of the Bobcats struck out one batter and made another fly out to right field to end the third, preventing the winning run to score for Walton.
Halaquist started the game for Bobcats and recorded seven strikeouts. He gave up just two hits for the game.
Logan Kennedy took to the hill first for the Trojans, lasting six innings. He allowed just four hits and struck out five.
Ives went 2-for-2 at the plate, leading the Bobcats in the loss.
Brandyn Scott and Shoemaker were the only two Trojans with hits as both went 1-for-3 for their at-bats.
Greene travels to Unadilla Valley on Thursday while Bainbridge-Guilford is scheduled to host Sidney. Both games have a start time of 4:30 p.m.

NORWICH – The bats of Norwich started early in the game, taking an early 5-0 lead in the second inning, the first of two frames that the Purple Tornado batted through the line up in their 13-1 STAC conference win over the Windsor Black Knights.
Norwich’s Marcus Cashman started the five run second with a single. He was later brought home by Keegan Wright’s at-bat, the fourth Tornado batter of the inning.
The Purple sent all nine players to the plate in the fourth inning with two batters seeing two at-bats. Norwich scored seven on just four hits in the frame.
One of the hits came off of Eli Rodriguez’s bat for a single, driving in two Tornado runners with two outs to continue Norwich’s trips to the plate in the fourth.
“We were pretty aggressive tonight,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “We have a saying in our program that when you get into the other team’s bullpen, we wreak havoc. And that’s what we did tonight. We made some things happen.”
Defensively, Norwich stood behind their pitcher Cashman, who got the start and pitched a gem as he found his groove early and held on until late in the game.
“Another goal of the program is that we would like to start every inning with an out,” said Turnbull. “This was the first game we have done it all year.”
“Marcus [Cashman] was really good for us on the mound tonight. He didn’t let them get into a grove and gained a lot of confidence when he struck out [Tim] Buchek, who is probably the best hitter in our league. When Marcus is in a groove, he is as good as anyone around.”
Cashman struck out 11 batters and surrendered just three hits in his six and one-third innings of work on the rubber. Throwing a total of 92 pitches on his time on the mound, 62 of them were strikes.
Norwich is scheduled to host Seton Catholic on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Before the game, the Purple Tornado seniors will be honored. Norwich be home on Saturday afternoon against the Sabers of Susquehanna Valley at 4 p.m. and will travel to Chenango Forks for a double-header on Monday. First game of the double-header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

AFTON – The Crimson Knights fell behind early Tuesday afternoon and were unable manufacture a come back in a 12-1 loss to Harpursville.
Harpursville took the lead on a 4-0 by the end of the second inning and continued extend the advantage with two in the fifth and sixth as well as four in the top of the seventh.
Afton was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Colin Nabinger reached base following a fielder’s choice by the Hornets. Nabinger was aggressive on the bases, stealing both second and third. He then scored on a passed ball later in the inning.
Christian Noyes earned the win for Harpursville, pitching the full seven innings while allowing one run on one hit and striking out five Afton players.
Kyle Grover was dealt the loss for the Crimson Knights. He lasted six innings with 11 hits and 11 runs surrendered. Grover allowed just on runner on base with a walk but struck out two. Teammate Damion Relyea came on in relief for the final frame.
Zack Alford picked up the lone hit for Afton in the bottom of the third inning.
Riley Livermore led Harpursville at the plate, going 3-for-3 in his at bats. The Hornets recorded 12 hits in the contest.
