Purple Tornado netters swat Yellowjackets on senior night

NORWICH – After Wednesday’s match, The Purple Tornado tennis team is one step closer to winning their division after beating Oneonta 6-1.
Before the match, Norwich’s head coach John Stewart and the Purple underclassman honored their three seniors – Austin Benenati, Josiah Shaver and Zayn Harper – for their years of play in the program. Stewart also honored special guests, Charles Stewart and Charlie Miers.
Norwich won easily, taking 6 of the 7 points and improving their record to an undefeated 7-0 record in the division.
The only loss came at first singles where Josiah Shaver lost to the Yellowjackets Chris Catan, who is currently ranked as the top singles player in Section IV Class C.
Winning in straight sets to stay undefeated on the season were first doubles partners Austin Benenati and Nate Christopherson, second doubles’ Zac Marsh and Carson Maynard and Matt Giglio, Norwich’s fourth singles.
Joel Fazio played his second match at second singles and won in straight sets of scores 6-4 in both sets.
Zayn Harper won at third singles with 6-2 and 6-0 set scores over Oneonta’s Dillon Pettit and the Purple’s third doubles partners Jahlil Jones and Jonathan Ryan notched another win, topping their opponents with the same scores.
Also before the start, Stewart recognized the 1948 undefeated tennis team.
Norwich is scheduled to travel to Susquehanna Valley Thursday at 4 p.m. Match could be postponed due to weather. The Purple Tornado are also scheduled for a home match against Windsor on Friday.
