Dominance continues for Norwich Track and Field against Sabers; Tornado boys 4x100 speed sets facility record
NORWICH – The Purple Tornado boys and girls scored themselves another meet victory as they beat the Susquehanna Sabers by 30 or more points Tuesday afternoon.
The 4x100 meter boys relay team from Norwich broke their own facility record, a record that was set just one year ago at the REK Invitational.
David Berger, Zack Race, Scott Tomanocy and Eric Conant raced to a time of 43.4 seconds in the one lap around the track with smooth handoffs of the baton, leading to easy transitions between sprinters.
Conant improved his time in the 100 meter dash, taking a tenth of a second off his time from the last time he hit the track. He also won the long jump field event with a distance of 20 feet-9 inches.
Trying his hand in the 200 meter dash for the first time this season was the Tornado’s Gabe Gawronski. He came out of the race victorious with a time of 23.3 seconds.
Gawronski also won the 400 meter dash and was a leg of the first place 4x800 relay for the home team. He was joined by Stanton Baker, Noah Bufalini and Julian Roque for the event.
Bufalini crossed the finish line first for the 800 meter event while teammate Baker placed first in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, the longest distance events of the meet.
Tomanocy and Bufalini teamed up with Zack Mills and Nik Barber as they all ran legs of the 4x400 meter relay, finishing with a time of 3:48.2 and first place for the event during the meet.
Mills threw the discus for a distance of 107 feet-8 inches for first place point for the Norwich boys team, winning one of the four field events the Purple won.
Teammate Zach Lowe tossed the shot put 42 feet-9.75 inches for the event win while Gawronski leaped to the top in the high jump with a height of 5 feet-6 inches for Norwich’s final win of the evening on the boys side.
The Sus Valley male athletes won both hurdling events along with the pole vault and the triple jump to score 40 points. The Purple Tornado tallied 100 teams points.
Norwich’s girls continued their dominance in Section IV, defeating the Lady Sabers 101-39.
While Sus Valley won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the Purple’s Hailey Colabelli prevented a sweep of all sprinting events included in the meet.
Colabelli won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.7.
Angela Carlson, Katie Gawronski and Delilah Geislinger joined Colabelli for the 4x400 meter relay to finish first while Emily Shattuck, Riley Marsh and Caroline Stewart ran the other legs of the 4x100 meter relay.
Carlson took home first place for the meet in the high jump, recording a final height of 4 feet-4 inches and teammates Stewart and Shattuck won the triple jump and long jump once again for Norwich’s three wins in field events.
The Lady Sabers captured wins in the pole vault, shot put and discus for field events. These three events along with the 100 and 200 meter dashes were the only events won by Susquehanna Valley for the meet.
The Tornado’s Gawronski shined on the track, winning both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. Her time in the 100 meter hurdling event was 17.6 seconds while her time in the longer distance was 1:11.4.
Nicole Jeffrey kept her winning stride in Tuesday’s meet. The Norwich stand-out swept all distance races – the 800, 1500, and 300 meter runs.
Teamed up with Jada Reynolds, Katrina Giodano, and Adrienne Vedder, Jeffrey aided in the 13:39 winning time for the 4x800 meter relay.
Both the boys and girls Purple Tornado Track and Field teams will host the REK Invitational Friday afternoon into the evening hours. Teams from Chenango County will gather for the annual event held in honor of the three girls – Emily Collins, Katie Almeter and Rachel Nargiso – that tragically lost their lives in 2001 to a drunk driving accident.
The meet will begin at 4 p.m. and will finish with the final events under the lights at the Norwich track.
