Hot bats for the Trojans take win from host Unadilla Valley
NEW BERLIN – On a rainy Thursday afternoon, The Storm of Unadilla Valley led 1-0 after the first but were unable to hold on once the visiting Greene Trojans got their bats going, racking up a total of 12 hits for the game. Greene took home the road win with a final of 10-4.
Cameron Osborne of UV grounded out to first base in the bottom of the first. His infield ground ball, however, allowed Payton Stirone to score from the third giving The Storm the 1-0 lead.
In the following inning, the Trojans’ Kolby Finch lined a double to left field, sending Logan Kennedy across home plate, tying the game at 1-1.
With Owen Howell double’s, along with two fielder’s choice plays by the Storm defense and a few miscues, Greene pulled away for good in the third, tallying four runs for the frame.
The Trojans added five more to the scoreboard in the final four innings of play.
Unadilla Valley was able to score three additional runs in the game, two coming in their last trip to the plate.
The Storm’s Andrew Jackson and Cameron Osborne each crossed home for the seventh inning runs, after Jackson started the inning with a single and a stole a base to second. Osborne sent Jackson home with a double to right field to record an RBI.
Osborne scored two batters later, giving Adam Lamont the RBI on his ground ball out to the shortstop.
Nick Shoemaker got the win for Greene, coming in relief of starter Alec Frair in the fourth. Frair allowed two hits while Shoemaker gave up three.
Mark Bergholtz went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for a big day at the plate for the Trojans.
Greene’s Owen Howell, Alec Frair, and Brandyn Scott all picked up two hits in the game. The three, along with Bergholtz and Kolby Finch, all scored doubles in their win on the road as nearly half of the Trojans’ hit total were for extra-bases.
Jackson finished the day 2-for-3 in his at-bats, scoring twice. Osborne went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Drew Emrich and Payton Stirone each added a hit for the Storm.
Stirone started on the hill for UV and lasted three innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out two. Jackson and Lamont each pitched two frames in relief; Jackson struck out three Trojans but surrendered five runs and six hits.
Lamont was on the mound for the final two innings for The Storm, giving up just one hit and rung up two.
One day earlier, Unadilla Valley was shut out by the Spartans of Unatego, with a final score of 16-0.
The Spartans picked up a comfortable cushion, tallying 12 runs in the first three innings. Their pitcher, Austin Gilbertson, eased through the game following the large lead, allowing just two hits for the Storm batters while striking out six.
Both Stirone and Osborne picked up a hit in the game, going 1-for-3 in their at-bats. Osborne’s lone hit was a double.
Unatego’s Dawson Wilsey was perfect at the plate, going 5-for-5 with four runs scored. His teammate Caden Clow also went perfect in his at-bats, reaching base twice in two chances.
Clow recorded a triple on the first pitch of his first trip to the plate and added three RBIs and three runs scored to his statline
Connor Griffin hit a home run to center in the bottom of the fifth, scoring the Spartans’ final run of the game.
The Storm are looking to schedule their make-up game against Harpursville for Saturday morning at 9 a.m. If it is unable to happen, UV will host Sidney on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
