Norwich schools budget hearing slated for Monday
NORWICH – A public budget hearing for the Norwich City School District 2018-19 budget will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the NCSD district office, eight days ahead of the May 15 budget vote and school board elections.
The budget includes a 2.59 percent tax levy increase, which would be an $84 increase on homes assessed at $100,000 in the city of Norwich and $99 on homes in the town. The proposed $42.1 million 2018-19 budget is a zero percent change from the 2017-18 budget. Detailed copies of the NCSD 2018-19 budget are available in the district office on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
District residents will also have the opportunity to vote for three vacant school board positions, as board seats currently held by Vice President Jennifer Collins, Joe Stagliano, and Bob Smith are up for reelection. Collins, along with candidates Brian Burton, Jamie Maistros, Brian Reid, and Herb Ryan, are each seeking a seat on the school board.
The budget vote and school board elections will be held on Tuesday, May 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The voting site for Norwich City School District residents in the city and town of Norwich, North Norwich, Guilford, New Berlin and Oxford will be at St. Bartholomew’s Parish Center; district residents in Plymouth and Smyrna can vote at the Plymouth Firehose, and district residents in Preston, Pharsalia, and McDonough can vote at the Preston Firehouse.
Voters must be citizens of the United States, at least 18 years-of-age, a resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to May 15, and registered with the Chenango County Board of Elections or the Norwich City School District five days prior to May 15.
Absentee ballot applications can be obtained at the district office during weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and must be received by the district no later than May 9 if mailed or May 14 by 4 p.m. if delivered.
