Complete package helps Marauders win three of last four

Marauders win three out of four straight games

SHERBURNE – The Marauders picked up their third win in four straight games Friday, defeating Herkimer 19-7 at home.

Sherburne-Earlville tallied 13 runs in the bottom of the first, setting the tone for Friday's game early. Their offense tacked on two more in the second and four in the third frames, giving S-E the 19-2 advantage.

Herkimer was able to score five in the fifth but it wasn't enough to keep the game going, ending the contest early due to the mercy rule.

Troy Fleming started on the rubber for the Marauders and came up big in those innings pitched according to S-E head coach Jay Tackabury.

“We've had four games in a row, which is tough on pitching,” said Tackbury. “I'm proud of the effort my guys showed this week. Playing four games in four nights, we came away with three wins. I'll take that any week.”

The Marauders' lone loss of the week came Thursday afternoon against Frankfort-Schuyler, in a final of 4-2.

The runs scored by F-S came in the first inning, an inning where Tackabury stated his defense made a few too many mistakes. “It ended up being the difference in the ball game,” said Tackabury.

Lagoe took the tough loss on the hill in the game, allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.

Cole recorded two hits, one being a double in the loss.

The other two wins for Sherburne-Earlville came with a 7-2 victory over Clinton on Tuesday followed by a 14-6 win over Mount Markham on Wednesday.

The Marauders look to continue their winning ways on Monday as they travel to Afton for a non-league, inter-county matchup. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

NEW BERLIN – Harpursville scored 10 in their first at-bats of the game and closed the final inning with nine, accounting for 19 of their 21 runs as the Hornets topped the hosting Unadilla Valley Storm Saturday morning.

UV chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the first inning, tallying four, but the team was only able to add four runs throughout the rest of the game.

The Storm's first two batters of the contest, Drew Emrich and Payton Stirone, drew walks against Harpursville's starter Riley Livermore.

Unadilla Valley's Cameron Osborne then stepped up the play and lined a shot to left field for a double, scoring Emrich from second and sending Stirone to third.

Tim Postma then singled, sending both Stirone and Osborne across home plate. Postma scored one batter later when teammate Adam Lamont doubled to right field. Postma scored the fourth run of the inning. Lamont was stranded on third as the Hornet's Livermore struck out two of the next three batters, forcing one to ground out.

Two innings later, UV cut the lead down to four when Lamont doubled for the second time, scoring Postma once again. Lamont was able to reach home after stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch by Livermore.

The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning before adding nine more in the fifth. Harpursville record 13 hits for the game, six coming in their high scoring first inning.

The Storm's offense was able to muster up another two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all as the game ended after their trip to the plate.

Osborne, Tim Postma and Lamont all recorded two hits in the game while Lamot led the Storm in the RBI column with three. Osborne and Postma both ended the day with two.

Harpursville's Greg Akulis finished a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs at the plate, leading his team offensively.

Colin Grant started on the hill for UV, striking out two while giving up six hits. Of the 10 runs scored while Grant was pitching, only one counted as an earned run.

Lamont came in on relief in the fourth, surrendering seven hits while also recording two strikeouts.

Livermore pitched the full five innings with six strikeouts. All eight runs scored by the Storm were counted against his earned run average.

UV will host Sidney on Monday afternoon for a MAC league contest. Game will start at 4:30 p.m.
