Sidney’s big fifth inning secures win over Lady Storm

NEW BERLIN – Limiting the visiting Lady Warriors to just two run through the first four innings, the Unadilla Valley Storm had the game within in reach. That was until Sidney opened up their lead with seven runs in the top of the fifth and left the Storm unable to recover in their 12-5 loss to the Warriors Monday.

Unadilla Valley tallied one run in the bottom of the sixth, wishing it was the start to something big with their high scoring offense of late.
As the Storm defense shut down the Lady Warriors in the top of the seventh, UV looked to their big bats to produce enough runs to tie or take the win late in the game.
Down to two outs early in the seventh, the hopes of the Storm dwindled.
Mia Stirone was hit by a pitch, giving UV their first base runner of the game. Stirone, with an aggressive strategy on the bases, scored on passed ball after stealing second and third during J Lopez’ at-bat. Lopez walked and Regan Sabines stepped up to the plate.
Sidney’s pitcher Olivia DeMott left the first pitch of the at-bat in an area where Sabines liked as she sent a deep line-drive to left field, sending Lopez home for another run in the inning. She ended up at third with the hit.
Sabines scored two pitches later on an error as the Warriors catcher tried to pick her off at third.
Battling to keep the game going, Kristen White fouled off the next two pitches. With the count 0-2, DeMott for White looking on the next pitch to the game and UV’s comeback effort.
Sabines and White both went 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI in the Storm loss. Teammates Jenna Hitt and Novalee Davis also recorded a hit in the game while Davis picked up a RBI.
Six Sidney batters had multiple hits in the contest with Kaitlin Bookhout leading the way with a perfect 4-for-4 day. Her teammate Alyssa Hawkins recorded three RBIs in the win.
