Norwich finished regular season untouched in divisional play

ONEONTA – The Purple Tornado tennis team finished its regular season Monday, defeating the host Oneonta Yellowjackets 6-1.
With the match win, Norwich finished a perfect 9-0 in the STAC East division.
The Tornado clinched the division title Friday so the match today was used to help both Oneonta and Norwich prepare for sectionals.
“We did play some players in different positions, giving them different experience,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
Playing third singles for the first time this season was Jahlil Jones. Jones showed no signs of trouble, easily winning in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0.
Winning his first varsity point was Vaughn Rudy with partner Jonathan Ryan at third doubles. Rudy and Ryan used scores 6-3 and 6-2 to also win in straight sets.
With the rest of the line up remaining the same, the Purple netters lost just one match for the event.
Norwich now prepares for their run at the sectional title, which starts on Thursday at Maine-Endwell.
“Last year, we were in first place going into finals but could not close it out in either doubles matches to win the title. We have just as good a shot as last year so it should be fun,” said Stewart.
The match has a scheduled start time of 10 a.m.
