Purple Tornado track and field finishes perfect dual meet season; 4x200 meter relay teams break long-standing records

NORWICH – The Lady Purple Tornado track and field team once again cruised to a dual meet victory on Tuesday with a score of 100-31. The boys on the other hand, were tested for the first time this season. They held on against the Yellowjackets for a 75-66 victory because of the win in the 4x400 meter relay race.
Nik Barber, Griffin Mills, Zack Race and Gabe Gawronki sprinted their one lap split and combined for a time of 3:38.3 to beat Oneonta in the event and the meet, keeping the dual meet record perfect for the season.
Race once again took the 100 meter dash with a time of 11 seconds flat. He also won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.5 seconds. With his time throughout the season, including his 10.75 at the Quinney Invite earlier this year, Race has qualified for states in both events. His 100 meter dash time has set him up for the national event later this year.
The 4x100 meter relay team of David Berger, Scott Tomanocy, Eric Conant and Race took the meet win with their time of 43.7 seconds, nearly breaking the facility for the second time this season. These four also have qualified for the state championships set to take place in early June.
Gawronski kept to his winning ways in both the 800 and 1600 meter races. In the 800, he race for a time of 2:07.9. Doubling the distance, Gawronski finished the four lap event in 5:01.9.
Tomanocy once again won the 400 meter dash, running a time under a minute for the quick one lap race. His time was 52.8, the fastest time Tomanocy has run in a dual meet at home this season.
All other races on the track were won by Oneonta, including the 4x800 meter relay––a race won usually won by the Tornado.
Conant landed in the pit with a distance of 20 feet, winning the long jump event as one of the field events won by Norwich.
In the last field event won by Norwich, Barber leaped 5 feet-6 inches in the air in the high jump event.
The Tornado girls won all but the 100 meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay on the track and the pole vault in field events.
Norwich’s Riley Marsh won the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.2 seconds, the second time she has won the event at home in a dual meet. Her time was the exact same from the first time she won earlier this season.
Nicole Jeffrey again took victories in all individual distance races. In the 1500 meter run, she ran a 5:33. Cutting the distance in half, Jeffrey finished on top in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.6.
In the 3000 meter race, the longest distance run in a meet, Jeffrey ran for the winning time of 12:13.
Hailey Colabelli raced to the win in the 400 meter dash and was also a part of 4x100 and 4x800 meter winning relays. In the 4x100 meter relay, she was joined by Shattuck, Marsh, and Stewart. For the longer relay race, Jada Reynolds, Katie Gawronski and Jeffrey teamed up with Colabelli for a winning time of 10:26.2.
Gawronski beat the field in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:07.8.
Stewart won the 200 meter dash for the meet along with both the long jump and triple jump. Angela Carlson of Norwich won the high jump while Liz Karlson swept both of the throwing events.
On Thursday afternoon, Tornado head coach Shaun Horan took a handful of Norwich athlete to Johnson City for two races – the girls 4x200 and the boys 4x200 meter relays.
Both relay teams were very successful, as they not only won the event for the meet but broke long-standing records in the event.
Berger, Race, Gawronski and Conant beat out a school record set 40 years ago while Delilah Geislinger, Marsh, Colabelli and Stewart now hold the record after it was set 35 years ago.
Both the Norwich boys and girls teams head to Oneonta to take part in their last invitational of the season.
