Lady Blackhawks pick up MAC win over UV
OXFORD – Allison Beckwith homered on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs to help the Oxford Blackhawks pull away for the 8-5 win over the Unadilla Valley Storm Thursday afternoon in a MAC mini tournament game.
In the first inning, Kristen White of UV hit a deep shot to left field on the first pitch of the at-bat. White rounded all the bases for an inside the park home run, giving the Storm an early 1-0 lead. Her teammate Novalee Davis drew a walk after White’s home run.
Davis advanced to second the out at first base, putting herself in scoring position for the Storm. Teresa Burgharct singled on the ground ball that was hard enough to sneak into center field, giving Davis enough time to reach home for the second run of the inning.
Oxford answered in the second, scoring two to tie the ball game up at 2-2. In the third was when Oxford’s bats came alive, tallying three in the inning. Beckwith’s line drive home run over the centerfield fence counted for two of the three. The third run was from Trinity Vargas crossing home plate.
Vargas drew a two-out walk then stole both second and third base. On an error by the UV catcher, Vargas scored.
The Blackhawks added another three runs in the fifth inning, giving themselves a big 8-2 lead.
Unadilla Valley came rolling back, scoring three in the seventh but their rally ended on a ground out to the first baseman.
Beckwith picked up the win in the circle, throwing 11 strikeouts while allowing seven hits. Her counterpart on the rubber was the Storm’s Bella Russo. Russo surrendered seven hits also and struck out three batters.
White was the lone UV batter with two hits for the afternoon, batting 2-for-3 at the plate.
Destiny Oralls and Eleni Spyratos both had two hits for Oxford. One of Spyratos’ his was double that drove in two Blackhawks in the fifth. Vargas stole five bases on the day while scoring three runs.
