UV school board releases survey on potential after-school program

NEW BERLIN – After hearing feedback from students and parents interested in having an after-school program, Unadilla Valley School District has considered partnering with a not-for-profit organization to make it possible.

The Healthy Kids Extended Day Program is a not-for-profit organization that has partnered with rural and high-need schools throughout New York State.

According to Unadilla Valley Superintendent Robert Mackey, the program reached out to the Unadilla Valley School District, and said for $3.33 an hour, on weekdays from 3:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., parents could pay to enroll their children in the program.

To help the school decide if the after-school program is worth pursuing, Unadilla Valley released an official statement and a survey on their website asking for feedback from students and parents.

“We are considering bringing Healthy Kids Extended Day Program to Unadilla Valley CSD to provide such care for children in grades pre-k through grade six,” stated the school, “Please complete this survey to help us gauge interest and assist in the planning process.”

The survey can be found on the school’s website, www.uvstorm.org.

The Healthy Kids Extended Day Program is a program licensed by the New York State Office of Family Services, and according to the program’s hiring requirements thorough background checks including The Online-Clearance System, the Justice Center’s Staff Exclusion List, and a Department of Criminal Justice Background Check.

Between the three background checks, the organization screens potential employees for any reports of child abuse or maltreatment, acts of abuse or neglect against individuals with special needs, and criminal history.

According to Mackey, the program would likely have students meet up in a location after school, and the program organizers would take care of staffing and events on it's own.

“The after-school program typically uses the cafeteria as a home-base, and provides a wide variety of activities for students to take part in,” said Mackey.

Mackey said the program might be a good option for parents who don’t get out of work until 6:00 p.m., or want their children to get involved in extracurricular activities.

“The Healthy Kids Extended Day Program won’t even break even on the cost, it’s a non-for-profit so they do these kinds of things to help the community,” he said.
