Arts council brings free opera music to Norwich students

NORWICH – On Thursday, May 10, the Chenango Arts Council (CAC) hosted middle and high school students from Norwich schools to attend a free program at the Martin Kappel Theater.

The educational performance workshop featured members of the Tri-Cities Opera of Binghamton in a special operetta of the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk, and educated students about basic theory and form of classical opera performance.

Nearly 300 Norwich City School District and Holy Family School students attended the performance, which was made possible by the Chenango Arts Council's Public Arts Initiatives.

“The Arts Council has a long history of recognizing the importance of offering accessible arts programming, and working with our school districts to organize relevant and engaging field trips is just one of the ways the CAC brings culture to our youth,” said Alecia ONeill, CAC executive director. “Welcoming our schools into the CAC for curriculum-based opportunities such as this has long been an important goal of the Arts Council, and I would especially like to thank the Tri-Cities Opera for developing a program that was able to keep a few hundred tweens and teens engaged while teaching the basics of opera.”

As part of its ongoing public arts initiative, the CAC will offer yet another free classical music program to the general public this Thursday, May 17 as it hosts the Binghamton Community Orchestra beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Kappel Theater, 27 West Main Street, Norwich.

The program: An encore presentation of “Our Town: Favorite Pieces of Favorite Places” conducted by Dr. Timothy Perry, includes selections from a concert performed in Binghamton on May 12, 2018.

The Binghamton Community Orchestra is comprised of nearly 70 musicians who are music educators, university professors, carpenters, and other community members.

Dr. Perry also serves as the conductor of the Orchestral Program at Binghamton University.

The highlight of this concert is a four-movement Triple Cities Suite named Our Town, written by Kristin Gilbert, commissioned by the BCO, and funded through a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Additional support was also provided by the Stewart W. and Willma C. Hoyt Foundation.

The suite is divided into four sections, all of which have something to do with the Binghamton area. The first section is called “Convergence” and describes the meeting of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers. The second movement, entitled “Dawn of a New Age” refers to the early history of Binghamton. The third section, “Valley of Opportunity” refers to the influx of immigrants seeking opportunities for a new and better life in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fourth section is called “Flight to the Future,” referring to the importance of the aviation industry of Binghamton.

The performance will be accompanied by a narration performed by Rick Kumpon and a video essay prepared from historical sources by Gilbert, that trace several of the many high points of the growth and development of our area.

In addition to Our Town the evening's program consists of arrangements inspired by such homelands as the British Isles, Italy, Germany, Austria and France by masters Handel, Butterworth, Pachelbel, Dvorak, and others.

In an age when the world has become so thoroughly connected in travel, communications, trade and industry, and the arts, it is sometimes easy to forget the extent to which music long served as a cultural marker intimately associated with the concept of place.

This event is free and open to the public, but donations to the Chenango Arts Council's Public Arts Initiative programs will be accepted. Seating is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
