Lady Bobcats held to 3 hits in the defensive battle with Lumberjacks at MAC Championship
DEPOSIT – When the two teams met earlier this season, Deposit topped Bainbridge-Guilford 10-0. With the Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC) Championship on the line for this matchup, the Bobcats and the Lumberjacks entered into a defensive duel on Wednesday.
In the bottom of the first inning, Deposit’s B Martin scored the first run of the game when her teammate Kyra Martin sent a fly ball to center field.
One frame later, Bryn Martin hit a hard ground ball to center field. Rachel Davis scored and Mikayla Martin rounded third to follow suit. Bobcats’ center fielder Jill Cannistra fired the ball into her catcher Megan Palmatier and threw out Mikayla Martin at home, ending the Lumberjacks rally.
Deposit tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-0.
With just two trips to the plate remaining for Bainbridge-Guilford, the Bobcats needed a rally of some sort to get themselves back into the game.
However, the Lumberjacks starter Makenzie Stiles was not about to let that happen. Stiles faced three batters in the sixth and seventh innings and in both, she struck out two and forced the batter into a pop out in three-up, three down fashion.
Stiles allowed just three B-G hits while striking out 10 for her time in the circle.
Bobcats’ starter Kori Thornton walked five and surrendered four hits to the Lumberjacks over four innings of work on the rubber. Morgan Neilberg came on in relief for the last two frames, striking out one and giving up one hit.
At the plate, B-G’s Kori Thornton hit a single while Kassidy Davis and Bree Barber both recorded doubles as the other two hits allowed by Stiles.
The Lumberjacks were led by Byrn Martin as she went 2-for-3 in her at-bats.
Bainbridge-Guilford will now have a few days to rest before their second-round sectional game after receiving a bye in the first-round. Seeded at four, the Bobcats will face either Moravia or Trumansburg on May 22 at 4:30 p.m. The Section IV game will be hosted by B-G.
