Out of the Darkness Golf Tournament rescheduled for Sunday

OXFORD – The Team Chenango Out of the Darkness Golf Tournament has a new date: this Sunday, May 20.
The tournament was originally slated to take place on May 12, but was rescheduled due to the weather.
“This is the tournament’s eighth year, and we want to give participants the best experience possible,” said Melissa Stagnaro, who helps organize the annual golf outing. “When our friends at Blue Stone suggested Sunday, May 20 as an alternative, we felt it was our best option.”
The group started reaching out to registered teams and hole sponsors directly after they made the call to postpone.
“We’re thankful that many will still be able to join us this weekend,” Stagnaro said. “We’ve even had a few additional teams register, as well. And there is still room for more.”
On event day, registration will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The cost to participate is $45 per person for Blue Stone members and $65 for non-members. That price includes green fees, cart rental and a steak dinner following the event. A putting contest, 50-50 and raffles will round out the day.
According to Stagnaro, teams can register by contacting Blue Stone Golf Course at 843-8352.
Proceeds from the annual event enable members of Team Chenango to participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Overnight – a 16-mile dusk ‘til dawn walk to prevent suicide and raise awareness for depression and mental illness.
“AFSP is the leader in the fight against suicide. They fund research, advocate, create educational programs and support survivors of suicide loss,” explained Maggie Dorsey, Team Chenango’s captain.
This year five members of Team Chenango will walk in the Overnight: Dorsey, Stagnaro, Teresa Hollister, Rheia Benedict and Lori Olsen. The group started preparing for the event three months ago, with the help of teammate Steve Estelow.
According to Dorsey, each member of Team Chenango has been personally touched by suicide through the loss of friends or loved ones.
“Every year, suicide claims more lives than war, murder and natural disasters combined. It is something that has touched our community far too many times. We want to put a stop to this tragic loss of life,” she said.
In addition to the golf tournament, Team Chenango will host a Remembrance Celebration to be held in conjunction with the Oxford Farmer’s Market, behind the Oxford Tavern, on Saturday, June 2. The event will include live music, food, raffle baskets and more. Details are posted on the group’s Facebook page.
